Going to Punta Cana from SFO. Is this the way to book award travel + Companion?

This is how I booked my first Southwest award flight:
1. SFO to ATL - 12/23 - Reach ATL at ~ 8 pm (Stay at Springfield Suites, Atlanta Airport)
2. ATL to PUJ - 12/24 (Leave ATL at 10:15 am)
3. PUJ to ATL - 12/30 - - Reach ATL at ~ 7 pm (Stay at Springfield Suites, Atlanta Airport)
4. ATL to SFO - 12/31 - 8:15 am to 11:20 am.

For SFO to ATL to SFO r/t, I redeemed 27,739 RR points
For ATL to PUJ to ATL r/t, I redeemed 25,200 RR points

As mentioned earlier, this is my first award booking with SW. Any help/suggestions would be appreciated.

This should work but be careful if there are delays or cancellations as wn will treat each trip separately.

I think with the overnight stay it should be pretty safe, although many of the Southwest international flights are once a day or less so a cancellation will screw things up.

Did you check to see if "old-style 1.0" Award tickets are available?

Good Question.

Log into your RR account and select the little "My Account" link under your name. On the left side look for the "View My Old Credits and Awards" button. You are there.

Those dates are blacked out by 1.0 Standard awards. Christmas and New Years.

No. Standard awards are subject to capacity controls, but not blackout dates.

You cant book a flight directly from SFO to Punta Cana, so you would have to use 4 old style rewards, which makes booking with points a better option either way you look at it.
