How widely accepted is Amex in Singapore?

How widely accepted is the American Express in Singapore, for restaurants and shopping?

Very widely. Not quite as ubiquitous as Visa/MC, but it's generally a pretty good bet that if they take plastic, they'll accept AmEx.

Major departmental stores and chain restaurants - not an issue.
Independent shops/restaurants - It Depends, can be a hit and miss.

Bring your Amex along as you'll prob be able to use it 80% of the time, but do have a backup (either cash or VA/MC)

Basically if they take plastic, Visa/MC. Amex is a hit or miss.

Plastic = Visa/MC is true pretty much anywhere (except maybe China), but I find Singapore's acceptance of Amex unusually high, 80% sounds about right. In Australia, for instance, it's probably closer to 50%, perhaps even less if I'm unwilling to pay a surcharge for the privilege.

AFAIK you generally need cash for hawker center F&B. Taxis require a large surcharge to pay with plastic.

Yep, it's an extra 10% on top of the fare if you pay by plastic. Do note Comfort (Blue) and City Cab (Yellow) taxis do not take Visa.

Got nailed a few times over the last few years using AmEx but may always incur costs on visa/MC.

Charging extra to use credit cards is not permitted by merchant agreements, but is fairly common anyway, especially in low-margin items like electronics. This is why Visa can't be used on Comfort & TransCab, who were charging a (ridiculous) 10% extra.

Indeed it is very widely accepted compared to many other countries. Just bring along a VA/MC just in case. Some places like hawkercenters/taxi's etc may either only accept cash or may be a place that is more convenient to pay with cash because of surcharges etc

Not if you're using NETS
(plus the rebate is more than the surcharge.)

???
5.11.2 of MC acceptance regulations prohibits this also.
There is no modification for Asia Pacific regions for this regulation except for NZ and Australia.

It's only because MC has not enforced it, but VA has.

You appear to be under the mistaken impression that those merchants who apply credit card surcharges or "cash discounts" give a 屎 about acceptance regulations. This doesn't happen in high street department stores, but in the little Sim Lim IT stalls etc where 3% can mean the difference between making money and losing money on a sale.
