NY and fireworks in Singapore - some insights

Yesterday went out with intention to watch fireworks around Marina Bay. If I had even a remote idea what it would like, I would stay home and go to sleep.

If every NY is like this (why would not it?) you pretty much have following options:

- somehow get on high floor on one of skyscrapers around Marina Bay. If you want to get into commercial establishment (restaurant/bar) expect that you need to do a reservation a year in advance and it will cost you $100-$250 just to get there.

- make a reservation at one of restaurants around Marina Bay. The same situation applies regarding booking in advance.

- be cramped with several hundred thousand people at Marina Bay. If you want to be on first rows either go and grab your place several hours in advance or use some muscle power by pushing others. Also remember - there are high chances that you might end up walking home after fireworks.

- Celebrate with your friends at some place outside of your home. It is recommended to find a place w/o crowds around (good luck). If you go to a bar/restaurant expect to pay $40 for glass of wine.

- stay home and sleep.

P.S. I have smart wife - she felt tired and went to sleep. Very wise decision.

I suspect this is not unique to Singapore -- my sister has gone to Times Square in the past, and based on her reports, I'd never try it myself.

We're lucky enough to live on a high floor in a building with a sky garden that looks out on Marina Bay. We woke the kids up at 11:45, grabbed the champagne out of the refrigerator, traveled about 40 feet to the sky garden, watched the fireworks and were back in our flat by 12:15am. The perfect New Year's Eve.

The public open area is closed?

EDITED: I think you are confusing The Fullerton Hotel with One Fullerton?

Exactly. One Fullerton is this area with all restaurants inside. Completely closed by road barriers and you need to have a reservation in one of the restaurants to get there.

Yes starting from the Customs' House up to the Merlion (included) was closed by road barriers. Wanted to get on promenade section - show them your printed reservation.

I understand - thanks for the info. there's road barriers there through F1 as well.

Was the underground access locked off to 1 Fullerton as well?

Yes.

There was the only way to get into the area - intersection of Collyer Q and Marina by foot. Everything else (including Que Link overhead bridge) was closed/blocked.

I spent NYE in Singapore a few years ago and watched the firworks from a balcony on the 20th floor of the Fairmont hotel. While probably not the very best spot in the city, watching the firework surrounding the Marina Bay Sands was quite enjoyable.
