Rumoured (now confirmed) launch to CBR & WLG

Australian media are reporting rumours that next week SQ will announce 4xweekly non-stop services between SIN & CBR, with tag service operating between CBR & WLG.

Interesting if this is true.

Another option to Wellington would be great, especially avoiding a connection.

"And as an international carrier already operating five flights to Sydney a day ..."

Didn't know there was so much SIN-SYD traffic.

Four daily SQ and one extra flight Tues-Sat. Not surprising considering the Asian population in Aussie and Aussies going for vacation in Europe. Not sure what's the O&D percentage though.

1.4 million passengers a year and 7% of the total international air freight into/out of Australia.

Interesting if this is true.
Would be interesting to see widebodies regularly at WLG - don't think that has happened since the old QF 747SPs. Not a long runway with no margin for error.

QF operated 767's in and out of there for years (I think NZ did as well).

QF would mostly be O&D on this route nowadays, and they have been getting good loads in recent months too (from my observations). They are also adding a MEL-SIN rotation so SIN is definitely getting quite popular.

Don't forget QF connecting onto 3K flights, so not necessarily O&D traffic.

Will be surprised to see the WLG leg last, current traffic ex SYD averages just under 400 a day in each direction, ex MEL its closer to 300, and they are servicing the route with 285 seats!

Yes it's hard to see it working.

I guess they wouldn't just be serving CBR-WLG, so it's not 285 seats for that specific market. A certain portion of those seats will be SIN-WLG (maybe 100 or more given the 500,000 catchment around WLG?). Leaving 180 to sell between CBR & WLG, and perhaps some they could capture as connecting traffic, as WLG maybe easier to transit, than say SYD .. CBR-WLG-CHC/AKL instead of CBR-SYD-CHC/AKL. And like other trans tasman tags, they only have to cover operating costs as otherwise plane would be sitting on ground in CBR.

Not sure if either will last, especially WLG, but I applaud SQ's efforts in going into these two markets where there are currently no mid/long-haul non-stop/direct flights to SE Asia. The other thing in SQ's favour is that WLG is basically technically impossible for the ME3 and CBR is just foolish to fly from DOH/DXB/AUH. There's usually something good about being the first in a market.
