Thumbs down Either supper or breakfast on 7.5 hr business class flt

I recently travelled on SQ 231 SIN SYD in J . it is a midnight flight.
when the FA came around she said I could only have either a supper meal OR a breakfast meal.
so on a 7.5 hr flight arriving in sydney at 11.45 I can only choose one meal.
I didn't believe it so I emailed SQ
firstly I was told that no you get supper and breakfast then I received this after querying it.

We wish to apologise for the incorrect information provided to you from our
previous correspondence. We seek your understanding that offering our
Business Class customers the choice of supper or breakfast was implemented
based on past experience and customer demand. Our night flights are
referred to as a sleeper service in order to allow customers to maximise
their rest period. As such, our cabin crew request meal orders prior to or
shortly after take off, asking if you would like to eat after take off or
before landing.
Just thought I should make it known here as Ive never heard of that in my life on any J class of that length of time.
had I known I would have eaten in the lounge but thought it would kill some time on the flight.
also very surprised that the 777-300 doesn't have a flat bed in biz.
think i should do more research before flying in future

Happens on the 6-7 hour flight to ICN as well. I have stopped taking SQ on that segment, but not because of the 1 meal, but because they leave the lights on 2 hours after departure to serve people "dinner", then turn the lights on 2.5 hours before arrival for breakfast/landing. 2 hours of sleep is not what I call well rested

It makes sense on a shortish overnight flight like that, rather than bothering people twice.

From my experience on these sleeper service flights you can have both meals if you want as a lot of ppl sleep for most of the flight. I was even asked if I wanted the second meal by a proactive SQ girl as she saw that I was awake around 3h before arrival and had a supper already.
Many airlines have this concept too on shortish night flights (BA or LH). I don't think this is unreasonable to offer this option as sleep is one of the most important things for business travellers and one should not waste food by catering two meals for all the passengers if history has proven that most passengers do not want two meals. However I do agree that you should research the various SQ flights if you value the meal service etc. Also if you check the SQ website it states clearly what product you are traveling on. Since SYD is considered a medium haul destination you do have the medium haul configuration on some of the flights.

On my recent SQ flight from ICN-SYD the lights remained off for the entire flight and only the reading lights were on for the passengers who were eating. They must have changed this or I was perhaps lucky.

For the SIN-SYD route both ways, the 773 with the medium haul J only flies during daytime flights so it is 'bearable' to an extent.

I actually like getting on the SQ242. J cabin is rarely full and the timing is decent enough to make most afternoon/evening functions without having to spend the night before in SIN.

I have often asked (nicely) for both meals if I felt like them, and never been declined.

yea, there might be excess onboard because not everybody chooses to eat. Just ask the crew nicely.

For an 1.00am departure it is not unreasonable from SQ to assume that most passengers would prefer to sleep. And to my experience most passengers on red-eyes in J will skip the meal anyway.

For me, it's a noise and smell issue and not just light. A bit better on the 1-2-1 J layout though

Simply said, I hate overnight flights <10h doesn't matter the cabin class.

Isn't it abit late to eat at that hour?
Usually for such late flights, I just want to sleep.
And airplane food isn't that fantastic either.

On medium haul, red eye flights ex SIN, I eat in the lounge then sleep all the way to my destination.

Don't fly QF or all you'll get for breakfast is a rice ball wrapped in seaweed!
