Virgin America Announces New Service Between San Diego and San Francisco

California's Hometown Airline Adds Sixth Destination to Growing Network

SAN FRANCISCO, Nov. 7, 2007 (PRIME NEWSWIRE) -- Virgin America today announced ticket sales for daily flights between its home base of San Francisco International Airport (SFO) and San Diego International Airport (SAN). The service will begin on Feb 12, 2008 with three daily flights and will expand to five daily flights on March 9, 2008. Connecting flights will also be available from San Diego via SFO to New York's JFK and Washington Dulles airports.

"We want to bring that famous Golden State spirit to the air with some fun and innovative features that we hope San Diegans will love," said Fred Reid, Chief Executive Officer of Virgin America. "With plugs to charge your laptop and other electronic gear near every seat and the most advanced inflight entertainment system in the skies -- our brand new planes were created with the tech-savvy California traveler in mind."

Virgin America's SFO-SAN fares start at $39 one way in the Main Cabin and $149 one way in First Class.* Virgin America's brand new planes feature moodlighting, custom-designed leather seats and the Red Inflight Entertainment system which allows guests to order food, watch one of 25 movies, satellite TV, play a videogame, create a personal playlist from over 3,000 MP3 music tracks onboard or instant message with other guests -- all from a 9" video touch-screen and keyboard at every seat.

"We're excited to welcome Virgin America to San Diego," said Thella Bowens, President and Chief Executive Officer of the San Diego County Regional Airport Authority. "As the only major California-based carrier, Virgin America will offer some unique in-flight amenities for San Diego travelers and will help further economic development and job growth for the San Diego region and the state."

SAN Departures are conveniently timed throughout the day, starting in February with 9:15am; 2:15pm and 6:50pm daily departures (adding 6:30am and 4:15pm departures in March). SFO departures start in February with 7:00am, 12noon and 4:35pm daily departures (adding 2:00pm and 9:05pm departures in March).

Launched on August 8, 2007, the airline plans to grow by more than 1000 employees a year. Virgin America flies to San Francisco (SFO), New York (JFK), Los Angeles (LAX), Washington (Dulles), Las Vegas (LAS) and starting on February 12, 2008 -- San Diego (SAN).

I had the impression that VX would launch nonstop from SAN to JFK, but I guess they want to channel everyone to SFO for flight connections.

I imagine they'll start offering SAN-JFK soon enough. I hope so!

Not sure if those cities are in their plans. It looks as if UA or Southwest's market is where VX is looking to break into. But they might also be following the Bigger Red Plane's routes to become the domestic feeder. MIA and FLL are leisure markets and I'm not sure if that's where VX is moving towards, yet.

Exactly!!! And, if VX would add SAN-LAS, I could totally forget about WN too.

I'd be able to use VX for

SAN-LAS
SAN-SFO
SAN-JFK

Very nice.

I'm surely if VX will ever gets more routes from SAN-JFK will be against DL, B6 & AA. I don't considerable which specific airlines will be taken this time. Right now, VX will be inaugurates flight from SFO-SAN next year in Feb. 2008. VX could be big simply problems with fare wars against B6, DL, AA.

This is clearly aimed straight at the heart of WN. First time anyone has really done that, I think, at least here in California -- a new LCC taking on an older one!

It would make sense to add SAN-LAS next, I think.
