Former Mayor Joe Wardy was detained Wednesday at El Paso International Airport after an X-ray machine at the security checkpoint detected a handgun in his carry-on bag.
Wardy was questioned by police and the FBI, but was not arrested or charged with a crime. He remains under investigation.

I think at worst he'll have to pay a fine, but I don't expect him to go to prison over it.
As the article states, this sort of thing happens pretty frequently. At SAT, we also find firearms in check-on luggage at the checkpoint on a fairly routine basis. The sticking point Wardy and his lawyers will have to overcome is the fact that the handgun was loaded. Doesn't matter that there wasn't a round in the chamber. That's the big no-no. Again, given his status in the community, I expect that all he'll have to do is pay a fine, and a hefty one at that.
I have no sympathy for him. A firearm owner is obligated to know the location and status of his or her weapons at all times. I do. Perhaps that's just a habit formed while I was in the military.
