Bump to EXP

Has anyone ever heard of AA giving you EXP status if your just short and in the middle of a trip? I am in Australia and am 1500 miles short and will be flying from SYD to SEA on Friday and would like to be OW Emerald and see about getting upgraded from Business to First on Qantas.

and what makes you think that AA EXP/OW Emerald will get you upgraded to F on QF?

It really does not happen. You probably have a better chance of hitting a jackpot on a LAS slot machine........

btw, Welcome to FT!

Our team travels to Australia 3 - 4 times a year, often on fuller flights the OW Emeralds get moved from Biz to First on the Sydney to LAX route on several occasions, of course some are also on the Qantas FF program...

But your programs listed in your profile says AA Exp - is this just in anticipation?

Quantas is more interested in the fare you paid than your status...same as AA.

Who is more interested in the fare?

No - time zones. Because it's Thursday here when it's Friday there, and his flight is on Friday, he becomes an EXP on Thursday.

It's a temporal anomaly kind of thing.

"An eddy in the space-time continuum."
"He is, is he?"
"Who?"
"Eddie."

Approximately 3.5 hours into the flight, a message will be sent from the AA world HQ in TX to your plane.

The message will be handed by pilot to the lead flight attendant, who will then escort you to your first class seat.

That didn't happen to me when I first made EXP years ago. Is this a new perk of the program? If it isn't, what can I expect as compensation for not getting this perk? 150,000 miles?

That's exactly what SELCAL is used for.

It is more than likely that on a SYD-LAX flight there will be more than sufficient QF WP (their own emeralds) for the to upgrade before they even think about a OW Emerald!

While there is (or has at least historically been) some leeway in just missing 100K miles for EXP, it applies only to annual totals. There has never been any leeway applied to giving someone status during the year before flying the full amount (miles, points, segments, whatever).

I was upgraded on QF as AA EXP this past June, SIN-PER. I still have the boarding pass reading 1B. The upgrade was technically to J, since that route has two-class service, but it had seats that become fully flat beds and a darn good (mostly Australian, of course) wine list. Whatever they call that class of service, it beats sitting in back. FWIW, I got the impression from the Singapore check-in agent that it was regular policy, not an exceptional favor.

QF only upgrade for operational reasons. Even QF members using their points/miles for upgrades don't necessarily mean their request will be honored.

I am guessing your flight was oversold down the back and therefore as a OW-Emerald you would have been up the pecking order for an op-up. QF certainly would not upgrade you for no reason.

Everybody has a once in a lifetime beautiful experience. Mine was joining the mile high club with an FA, but the point of my post was that it's not something that the OP should count on, waste hers/his time trying to get EXP (which won't happen anyway), thinking that somehow that will get an automatic or even just a better shot at an upgrade.... I will say it again, the chances of getting an upgrade as an EXP with QF are slim to none. Does it happen? I'm sure it does on occasion, but to give the OP some hope that it's something s/he can count on, just because it happened to you one time, is bad advice IMHO.....
