Lufthansa is reducing its fuel surcharge for all intercontinental flights by ten euros per flight leg. The move is in response to the sustained drop in crude oil prices over the past several weeks. The surcharge on long-haul tickets bought on or after 16 October will thus be lowered from 62 euros to 52 euros. The surcharge for German domestic and intra-European flights will remain unchanged at twelve euros per flight segment.

Thanks to its forward-looking fuel-hedging policy and its modern, fuel-efficient fleet, Lufthansa is well placed in comparison to its competitors. However, persistently high oil prices are continuing to put pressure on the airline’s expenses. Lufthansa constantly monitors oil prices and adjusts its fuel surcharges in line with developments in jet fuel prices on the spot markets.

Its good that it is coming down, albeit still an outrageous amount. Doesn't alter my opinion, however, that the fuel surcharge should be abolished since fuel is a core cost and not a tax it should be included in base fares.

I totally agree: In my opinion the fuel is part of the fare. At least a classic operating material of the production process of a flight. Not fuel surcharges or something like fur such a essential part.

But it seems like, the airlines have got a different view on this topic...

Obviously, that's correct, and any thinking being will agree. Then again, common sense and airlines are oxymoronic, and as long as fuel surcharges remain in the tax portion of the total, they also remain fully refundable. I actually like that, and I make use of it now and then. After all, it's the total that counts, and in this regard LH remains pretty competetive so far, at least on those domestic and European hops with LCC competish. Hence, as long as LH keeps cheap fares in 99 EUR total range no matter what, high fuel surcharges are in fact a feature, not a bug.

If not documented - what is the difference?
Plus not everyone is as diligent as you and actually gets the
taxes on the unused portion of a ticket back. I for example
never do or did .
