I don't know why it's under changes; that's always been true (at least for the past 10 years or so). Visa/MC add 1%, and banks are then allowed to add up to an additional 2%. All the BankOne/FirstUSA credit cards I've ever had have added the maximum. When I travel abroad, I only use ATMs or my one (MBNA) credit card that doesn't add any additional surcharge.

Up until now my UA card added 2%. I will have to read all the stuff that comes now. Thanks for the heads up.

I believe the statement just said that if MC/VISA drop their surcharge to 0%, that Chase will increase the surcharge to 3%, keeping the surcharge at 3% as it has always been (at least for the past several years).

The United MP card does not get used overseas for this reason. Unfortunately, they will continue this HIGHLY PROFITABLE markup as long:
the 2% additional surcharge profits
EXCEED
the profits lost because a few customers do not use the card overseas

With the USD's recent and ongoing slide, this fee is even more painful. Of course, BankOne is relying on its greatest asset: An ignorant customer.

Come to think of it, when you use your CC is foreign countries, the vendor also tag a 3% surcharge, so we are actually getting charged a total of 6% (vendor + bankone) when making foreign purchase.

They also encourage this by not listing the fee on your bill - they fold it into the exchange rate.

I would never patronize a vendor who did this. I believe it's also a violation of their credit card agreement.

Only in the United States. Those agreements are different overseas.

This is why I only use AMEX or my DEBIT card when I'm overseas.

Perhaps the OP meant ignorant in the sense of uninformed.

RE:international cc charges

I was under the impression that debit cards also added extra charges internationally. Wasn't there a long thread in June of the year that MP added the 2% about MBNA's Amtrak Great Rewards Card being the only card that still held to the 1% charge?

Anyone have any more current information.

Although I've had most CC's add 1-3 % to international transactions, I've NEVER had a merchant add additional fees to a CC transaction in any country.

And this comes with the experience of hundreds of international CC transactions.
