OFFICIAL 2004 Secret Santa Thread

HO HO HO,

Greetings from your 2004 Secret Santa coordinator William (wharvey).

This is the official thread for the 2004 Secret Santa Extravaganza. Any questions or comments should be limited to this thread or emailed to me and no other threads should be started.

I hope many of you choose to participate in this years’ event.

While you are thinking about what to get for your FT "friend", consider also purchasing a gift for a child or making a donation to your favorite charity.

Below are the rules for the 2004 Secret Santa event:

1. Any questions on the Secret Santa process should be directed to me via this thread or via email (please do not use Private Message!). My email address is [email protected].

2. The expected limit on your gift purchase is $30 USD and does not include shipping and packaging costs. Of course, I am sure no one will mind gifts of higher value or certain paper from airlines and hotels that are "priceless". 

3. Secret Santa has the option of remaining anonymous. I will not disclose names nor addresses of anyone who participates to anyone other than their Secret Santa. I expect that any information you receive from me will not be shared with anyone else.

4. The coordinator assumes no responsibility for delivery or non-delivery of gifts. I want this to be fun and hope that everyone who participates will have fun and get into the holiday spirit. Understand, however, that failure to deliver will result in your being denied participation in future years. Two people have been placed on Santa’s bad boy list from failing to deliver gifts last year… so they will not be allowed to participate this year.

5. You must be registered on Flyertalk.com at the time you send your email. IF you are a lurker, you must register on Flyertalk.com before becoming a Secret Santa participant. You may also want to post in the "Who We Are" thread to introduce yourself to the community.

6. Deadline to participate is November 28th, 2004 (Rochester, NY date). If you wish to participate, you MUST send an email to me (again, not a Private Message). My email is [email protected]. In this email, you must provide the following information and PLEASE answer the questions in the order provided below as that will help me input the data into my tracking forms:

a. Your full name (first and last name)

b. Your mailing address for your gift. This address should be one where you can receive a package in December.

c. Your email address (must be verifiable)

d. Your Flyertalk handle

e. Date of FT registration

f. Number of Flyertalk.com posts

g. No more than three facts about yourself that might help your Secret Santa shop for your gift.

h. A "Yes" or "No" as to whether or not you are willing to send a gift outside your country. If at all possible, please be willing to ship out of your own country... especially for USA residents.

If I receive enough participants early on, I may go ahead and match up members so you can get a head start on your gift buying. I would then provide a second match-up after the November 28th deadline (which is right after I return from an anniversary trip with Mr. Santa in London). Santa has to get his rest in before the mad rush of the holiday season.

Please be sure to read Santa updates through this thread!!!

I am glad to step forward again this year and be your Secret Santa coordinator and hope you find it to be another wonderful experience of this great Flyertalk community.

William

This post is where I will list all the members who are choosing to participate in Secret Santa.

If you are on this list, it means I received an email from you that met the requirements.

This list reflects all emails I have received that met the requirements as of the edit date at the bottom of this post. If you think you should be on this list, please re-email me your information.

Thanks,

Santa

Placeholder for potential Santa announcements

10/31/04 - Santa sent out some Secret Santa assignments today. If the post above shows you were sent an email, please check for it. If you did not get it, please email Santa.

11/29/04 - Santa sent out final emails with remaining assignments.

REMINDER: Please send me an email when you mail your gift out.

I want to thank the person who sent me a thank you gift for coordinating. It was greatly appreciated.

William aka Santa

Just a reminder that if you are willing to ship out of the US to put Gift & low value on the customs form, so that the giftee doesn't get hit w/ customs tax - and better to send from individual address vs corp address. For some reason, even if it's a personal item, the corp return address usually makes customs hit it w/ a tax based on value.

Cheers. Sharon

William, I'm in. Will email you w/ requested info.

Since these are supposed to be ~$30 items anyway, I wouldn't bother to lie about the value of the item on the export documentation. Nothing gets a Customs inspector's attention better than shipments listed as being worth $1 or $5; after all, why would somebody go through the time and expense to ship something to another country that is worth so little?

However, noting "gift" on the paperwork is definitely a good idea.

If you're that concerned about the recipient paying duties, another option is to ship the package as DDP, or "deliver duty paid," in which case the exporter is responsible for the charges.

(In addition to my regular job responsibilities, I've also been given the import/export hat to wear at work. What a PITA. But I'll be happy to help anybody ship their presents outside the US.)

SweetWillie darling, stores have had Xmas items up since 3rd week of Sept - even Hallmark's got holiday cards out.

That's right - I forgot - these gifts are supposed to be around $30, so you can fill out the accurate cost on the customs form. It's just a green/white form that takes about a minute to fill out at post office, & there is a spot where you can check gift.

Reason I brought it up is one of the Canadian FTers got hit w/ customs duty last year on an SWU they received from Secret Santa - the person marked it as value of $100 or something and that's what the person had to pay duty on (then insult to injury the upgrade didn't clear).

I was shipping something to Canada recently that was a gift, and I was told by the AC FTers that as long as the value was $50 or less, it was marked gift, & came from a private (vs corporate) address, it would be fine.

Cheers. Sharon
