how long of trip from Kyoto to Narita airport?
We have a flight from NRT at 6:25pm and we'll wake up in Kyoto that morning after a couple days down there. We'll be taking the train from Kyoto back to NRT.
Because we'll be there over the holidays, I'm having the concierge at our Tokyo hotel get our train tickets for us prior to our arrival. The question is, what is your recommendation on what time to leave Kyoto to allow enough time for the trip up to NRT and check-in for the flight?
Is the process of getting from Kyoto --> NRT a big one?
Thanks!

Not a particularly big hassle -- hop on the Shinkansen at Kyoto Station, change to the Narita Express at Tokyo Station. You can probably make it in 3 hours on a good day, but I'd allow a little buffer (mostly for navigating through the fairly colossal Tokyo Stn).
I presume flying back from KIX instead of NRT is not an option?

You leave Kyoto-station by Nozomi 12th at 13:09 and arrive at Shinagawa station at 15:22, then leave there by Naita EX 31th at 15:50 and arrive at Narita station at 16:57. Maybe it is the best way for you.

Go to this site, enter "Kyoto" and "Narita Airport" and the date and time when prompted -- you can see all the options for yourself.

It is absolutely necessary to have reservations with seats for the Shinkansen and Narita Express as you are travelling during the Obon holiday season. If you don't have seats be prepared to stand in very crowded trains. Good luck!

Have you considered flying ITM-NRT?
There is a Fair flight (NH codeshare) that leaves Osaka Itami Airport at 13:10 arriving Narita at 14:25. It should take about an hour by the Hankyu railway to get from central Kyoto to Itami. Depending on your carrier back to the States, you may be able to check your bags all the way through at Itami.

Update
Update: We left Kyoto on the 12pm Shinkansen train, a quick change in Tokyo station catching the 3pm Narita Express and were at Terminal 1 and checked in by 4:45 for our 6:30 flight.
Very easy process. We never found the machine to stamp our Narita Express tickets once we got to Tokyo station but the conductor on the train didn't seem to mind.
