segment question

Flew AA1645 BDL to LAX last week.

We had a 1 hour stop in ORD where we had to get off, but didn't switch metal. This was credited as 1 segment.

Is that right?

Yep: One flight number, one segment.

Which, BTW, is true even if you do switch metal - as sometimes happens.

It is an oddity in the airline industry that a "direct" flight is counted the same as a nonstop flight for mileage, upgrade, and fare purposes.

Is every 500 miles flown considered a segment? ie., LAX-ORD r/t is how many segments?

If it's the nonstop, it's just one segment (1700+ miles).

You need to have different flight numbers for more than 1 segment. The length of flight has no relationship to it.

BOS-JFK = 182 miles = 1 segment
JFK-NRT = 6745 miles = 1 segment

Only exception to this is when you have two separate ticket coupons (not boarding cards) for each take off and landing. I often build my "direct" flights as connections. I may pay an extra 5 bucks for this, but I get the segment credit even though the flight number is the same.
