Quote: So, I called this morning to seek retention offers for my Chase OnePass Plus (now, United Explorer) as the annual fee was already billed in the last statement that closed. I was surprised that the agent closed it promptly without any discussion or questions whatsoever! May be, the retentions group was closed being an early Sunday morning.

Anybody has had a similar experience with Chase?
Had the same experience when I called to close the account in february. Was equally surprised at the time. Thought it was because I had called during the weekend when retentions was likely closed?
Just called in to speak about potential cancellation 2 months in advance. 1st level csr said no one in retention available to talk, but could send a note over to marketing to request 10K avios. Marketing will review my account and let me know if I actually will get them! Weird.
Quote: Citi AA Visa
Sorry, meant Continental OnePass haha
I still am curious how fast other retention offers have posted? Phone op said it would hit pretty quickly, and it has been about...2 weeks almost now?

I was thinking the miles may just show up on my next credit card statement closing on the first.

I called to cancel my BA Visa just before the annual fee renewal came up. No retention offers made, despite the fact that I had charged over $50k in the first year. I had called them on a Saturday.
Just called and spoke with retention rep for any offer for Chase onepass. I spent over 30K last yr and they only had 2 offers. $50 off annual fee or spend $1,000 in the next 30 days and get 5,000 miles bonus.

Were you even transfered to a retention specialist? We try to call on weekdays, as that maximizes the chances of getting someone beyond a line CSR (who might just close the account right away). Just yesterday, my DW called re her BA Visa; even though we hadn't put much spend on the card beyond the minimum to earn the bonus, Chase offered (and she took) 5000 miles.

No, I wasn't even transferred to a retention specialist. Next time, we'll call on a weekday -- which will be in a month or so when my wife calls to close her Chase BA Visa (when the annual fee is up for renewal).
Just called. Asked to speak to retentions. Transferred me. Gave speech about fee and having other cards with fees. Gave me 5000 miles. Wouldn't do anything else. Accepted and he said will post in 30 days
Annual fee posted at the beginning of the month on UA (former CO) MC, 3 days before card anniversary. Now, I have been using the card as my main card for the last 6 months, so that might make a difference, but after reading this thread I was a little discouraged.

Called (on a weekday) and spoke to first CSR. She didn't offer any bonuses, but did say I could use miles (ostensibly the opening bonus miles) and save the cash to pay for the cost of the annual fee at united.com/choices. Sure enough, there's a link there for "Redeem for annual fee reimbursement". She said it would be just north of 10,000 miles. I asked for a miles bonus to cover that - no dice.

I asked for a retention specialist. She said there's no such thing, but there's a closing dept (challenging me to seriously want to close the acct). I accepted the challenge. Next on the line comes a senior CS rep, who offers a $100 statement credit. I said yes and thanks. Just made $15!

9 minutes well spent.
just hit with the sapphire annual fee. Stories here about them canceling as soon as you request a "gift" to keep the account open? Do they give you time after closing to transfer UR points or should I transfer before talking to a "retention specialist"?
Please remember, Sapphire is one of those cards which has real benefits that justify its annual fee. I cancelled my Gold Amex charge card in January which is in the same cateogry. When I called to cancel, the American Express rep told me how wonderful the card was. When I told her that's great but the departure of Continental as a MR partner made the card less valuable to me and I didn't use most of the other benefits she offered me a $50 statement credit towards the $150 annual fee which I declined and then she closed my account.

Your likely to have more luck getting a statement credit or bonus miles to offset the annual fee with cards like the BA card and the UA Explorer card. Sapphire because UR allows transfers to multiple programs is valuable and Chase knows that. Add to that the double points for travel and dining (the latter is very rare) Bottom line as you alluded to is be prepared to cancel the card if that's what you call threatening to do.

Chase Sapphire Preferred Waive Annual Fee 2nd Year?
I wanted to share my experience with the Chase Sapphire Preferred card and the annual fee after the 1st year.

I called today and said I wasn't sure I wanted to keep the card, since I hadn't maximized it's value with foreign travel. I told the CSR that my fee would be coming due on the next statement and asked if there were any incentives or spending requirements that could offset of waive the $95 fee. She promptly replied that the fee could not be waived, but I could downgrade if I wanted.

As a consolation, she posted 2,500 UR points to my account, but would not offer anything else.

I don't want to cancel my card, but I'm wondering if I seriously threatened to cancel the card if someone in the retention area would do better.

Anyone else have a similar or successful experience waiving the 2nd year annual fee?
Chase Sapphire folks feel they have a card worth the $95. I haven't heard of anyone getting a waiver or credit. I think you were lucky to get the bonus points.

Just an update -- Got a letter today stating that they would not offer me 10K avios. Going to cancel.
