Champagne

Dom Perignon Vintage 1998
For almost eighty years Dom Pérignon has been synonymous with fine champagne. Captivating and creamy, here is yet another superior vintage from Cellar Master Richard Geoffrey. With charm and breeding very much to the fore, white peaches, brioche and a lively mousse dominate this champagne’s approach. The ’98 is drinking beautifully now.

White Wine

Château Fuissé, Pouilly Fuissé Vieilles Vignes, vintage 2001
The Vincent family has headed Château Fuissé since 1852 and continues to make wonderful wines. Sixty-year-old vines produce less bountiful crops but the reward is richer and more concentrated fruit. This is the vineyard’s “tête de cuvee” (top blend). Matured in oak to give depth and complexity, the wine is intense on the palate with crisp acidity.

Kim Crawford, Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc, vintage 2005
In 2005, Kim Crawford’s Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc was selected by influential US magazine Wine Spectator as one of its top 100 wines of the world. The New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc of Marlborough has an intensity rarely achieved elsewhere. This 2005 has gooseberry and elderflower notes on the nose, followed by an explosion of fruit on the palate. Marvellous drinking.

Château La Louvière, Pessac-Léognan, vintage 2003
André Lurton, doyenne of the category, has nurtured the centuries old Château La Louvière since 1965. Situated just south of Bordeaux, the Château was declared a national monument in 1991. A blend of Semillon and Sauvignon allows this wine to be drunk young with the zup and verve from the Sauvignon, and to age gracefully with the power and intensity of Semillon grapes.

Red Wine

Château Lynch Bages, Pauillac, vintage 1996
This Fifth Growth Pauillac hails from an estate that has remained virtually unchanged since the 16th Century. Classically structured, dense and complex, the Lynch Bages ’96 vintage displays an unusually elegant style. Heady aromas of plum, blackberry and liquorice make for a virile and full-bodied wine with soft tannins and a long finish.

Penfolds Bin 389, Cabernet Shiraz, vintage 2002
Affectionately known as “Baby Grange” – due to the wine’s part maturation in barrels that held the previous vintage of Penfold’s famous Grange – Bin 389 was first made in 1960. The 2002 Cabernet Shiraz is full and persistant across the palate with firm tannins balancing flavours of blackberry and blackcurrant, mocha, chocolate and cedary oak. This is a classic Bin 389.

Domaine des Perdrix, Nuits-St-Georges, 1er Cru Aux Perdrix, vintage 2001
Just north of Beaune, Nuits-St-Georges is the southernmost village of the Côte de Nuits. Domaine des Perdrix is renowned for making great Côte de Nuits and this wine will not disappoint. This is a sturdy burgundy with a soft and velvety texture, a strong backbone of cherries and redcurrants, and a juicy finish.

Port

Croft, vintage 1998
Established over 300 years ago, Croft produce their Late Bottled Vintage only in very good years. Bottled six years after harvest, the silver medal-winning 1998 Late Bottled Vintage is deep in colour with a rich, creamy nose of sweet blackberry and cherry fruit. With hints of dark chocolate and juicy berry notes on the palate, its gentle tannins give it a very approachable style, making it suitable on any occasion.

Of the three Champagne houses that carry the name Heidsieck – Heidsieck & Co and Piper-Heidsieck are the two others – that of Charles Heidsieck has the reputation for the best vintage wines. Dominated by the Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier, this superb blend nevertheless has a high proportion of Chardonnay from Premier Cru vineyards, which adds both liveliness and creaminess of texture. 1995 was a great vintage in Champagne, which, at 10 years old, has matured to perfection.

White Wines

Kloster Eberbach Riesling Kabinett 2003 Rheingau

The high proportion (75%) of Cabernet Sauvignon produces a wine with a brilliant deep carmine colour and an aroma of cedar wood over blackcurrants. 1998 was a very good vintage that produced classically firm clarets that needed time for the tannins to soften. At eight years old, this wine is now in full bloom.

Champagne

Charles Heidsieck 1995
Of the three Champagne houses that carry the name Heidsieck – Heidsieck & Co and Piper-Heidsieck are the two others – that of Charles Heidsieck has the reputation for the best vintage wines. Dominated by the Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier, this superb blend nevertheless has a high proportion of Chardonnay from Premier Cru vineyards, which adds both liveliness and creaminess of texture. 1995 was a great vintage in Champagne, which, at 10 years old, has matured to perfection.

Piper Heidsieck 1999
Piper Heidsieck, known simply as “Piper” to its many admirers, epitomizes the zest and gaiety of the social scene for which Champagne is so perfectly suited. From the excellent 1999 vintage, this is a superb blend of the two greatest Champagne grapes : 60% Pinot Noir for ripeness and body with 40% Chardonnay for elegance and finesse. Matured for over five years in Piper’s deep chalk cellars in Reims, it has now reached perfection.

White Wines

2004 St Clair Marlborough Sauvignon
The Marlborough region in New Zealand’s South Island is home to some of the world’s finest sauvignon blanc. This wine, made by winemaker Matt Thompson, displays all the leafy, fresh and racy flavours typical of the region.

Kloster Eberbach Riesling Kabinett 2003 Rheingau
A lively light yellow with green tints. In taste, a fine fruity bouquet reminiscent of yellow fruit and peach, ripe fruit on the palate and harmonious with a soft, dry finish.

Red Wines

2003 Craggy Range Gimblett Gravels Vineyard Merlot
The Gimblett Gravel area of Hawkes Bay regularly produces some of New Zealand’s finest red wines. The Merlot grape, in particular, does well on these infertile stony soil. Craggy Range, headed by viticulturist and Master of Wine Steve Smith, specializes in single vineyard wines. This vibrant wine has typical Merlot plumminess combined with regional earthiness. This wine is no lightweight with its ample tannin and firm structure.

Chateau Cissac 1998 Cru Bourgeois Haut Medoc
Cissac is one of the Medoc’s finest Cru Bourgeois.

Port

Taylor 2000 Late Bottled Vintage Port
LBV Port, a blended Port from a single vintage that is bottled after four years in barrel, is a style pioneered by Taylor. It is always dark in colour, rich and plumy, with a firm backbone that underlies the ripe, spicy, concentrated fruit flavours that leave a rich fullness on the palate. 2000 was an outstanding vintage in the Douro and this is a superb example.

It is always dark in colour, rich and plumy, with a firm backbone that underlies the ripe, spicy, concentrated fruit flavours that leave a rich fullness on the palate. 2000 was an outstanding vintage in the Douro and this is a superb example.

Champagnes

Dom Pérignon 1998
Cuvée Dom Pérignon, thought by many connoisseurs to be the finest of all Champagnes, is a byword for luxury and perfection the world over. Made only in the best years and from only vineyards rated Grand Cru 100%, it comes from a finely balanced blend of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir grapes and is aged for at least seven years before release. Dom Perignon is only produced in the very best years and 1998 was another superb vintage, following the excellent 1996, 1995 and 1990, which shows to perfection the supreme elegance of this great Champagne.

Krug Grande Cuvée
Founded in Reims in 1843, the House of Krug is now managed by the 5th and 6th generations of the Krug family. Rigorous selection and care go into every detail of the “multi-vintage” Grand Cuvée, which offers a magical combination of aromatic complexity, power and finesse with a long, lingering finish. Krug is the ultimate experience in champagne.

White Wines

Erdener Treppchen Riesling Kabinett 2003 Dr Loosen
The steeply terraced Treppchen vineyard at Erden with its slaty-schist soils is one of the fines in the Mosel. Erden Loosen is one of the region's very best producers and the very hot 2003 vintage was the earliest since records began in 1550. These factors combined make this wine one of the greatest expressions of the Riesling grape : lemony yellow colour, floral, white peach and citrus bouquet, beautifully ripe fruit on the palate with a lively acidity to lift the touch of sweetness.

Meursault 2000
The Meursault vineyards are situated a few kilometers south of Beaune in Burgundy's Cote d'Or (or Golden Slope). The quality of a "villages" Meursault depends as much on the grower's know-how and care as on the location of his vineyards. Joseph Drouhin et Cie, one of Burgundy's most respected negociants, buys grapes from selected vineyards and vinifies them in the traditional manner. The wine is slowly fermented in small oak barrels with a further maturation for 9-12 months in barrel, not more than 30% of which is new, to avoid the fruit being dominated by the wood.

Red Wines

Château Cos d’Estournel 1998 Saint-Estephe
This famous chateau, whose wine is cellared in a splendid Oriental temple complete with pagoda towers built by Louis Gaspard d’Estournel in the 1830s, is widely accepted as “the First Growth of Saint-Estephe”. The 1998, a superb blend of 55% Cabernet Sauvignon and 45% Merlot, has a deep velvety colour, rich black pepper and tobacco spices and the long, distinguished flavours of the very finest red wine of the Medoc.

Pommard 1999 Bouchard Pere et Fils
The village of Pommard, south of Beaune, produces one of the finest red wines in the whole of the Burgundy region. It shares with the equally famous Nuits-Saint-Georges further north, a vibrancy of fruit and firm structure that evolves superbly well with age. 1999 is an excellent vintage, one of the best of the 1990s. As such, this wine, from the largest owners of Grand and Premier Cru vineyards in Burgundy, is now at its peak.

Port

Warre's Twenty Year Old Tawny
Warre's is the oldest British Port house, dating back to 1670 and still in family hands. A Tawny Port is one that matures in barrel over many years, losing its dark ruby colour in the process. This blend, of an average age of over 20 years, is quite superb, with warm, rich flavours, spirity aftertaste and a bouquet of raisins and orange peel. It is the perfect accompaniment to cheese and nuts.

Dow’s 20 Year Old Tawny Port
Dow possesses some of the finest vineyards in the Upper Douro and is one of the oldest names in the history of Port, dating back to 1798. The beautifully balanced Tawny Port is carefully matured for over 20 years in wooden barrels known as “pipes” before being bottled. Light tawny in colour, showing mature raisiny fruit aromas with hints of honey. It is on the palate rich and nutty, with a wonderful balance, a clean crisp finish and a soft lingering aftertaste.

White Wines

2004 Cloudy Bay Sauvignon Blanc
Cloudy Bay is the definitive New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc. Since its first vintage in 1986, Cloudy Bay has excited wine drinkers the world over with its racy freshness and zingy flavours. Made by winemaker Kevin Judd, this wine well deserves its cult status.

Meursault 2000
The Meursault vineyards are situated a few kilometers south of Beaune in Burgundy's Cote d'Or (or Golden Slope). Red Wines

1997 Chateau Reynella Cabernet Sauvignon
Australia's soft rich red wines have achieved great international acclaim in recent years. Chateau Reynella was established in 1938 by John Reynall who planted some of the first vineyards in South Australia. Today, Chateau Reynella's red wines are made by young, high profile winemaker Steven Pannell. This wine, a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, has a deep red colour, spicy fruit and excellent oak flavours. It is a fine example of the McLaren Vale style.

White Wines

2001 Jackson Estate Sauvignon Blanc
The Marlborough region in New Zealand's South Island produces some of the world's finest and most distinctive wines from the Sauvignon Blanc grape. This wine displays all the leafy, fresh and racy flavours typical of the region. Recently Jackson Estate, which is owned and run by the Stichbury family, has emerged as one of New Zealand best exponents of this style.

Chablis Premier Cru Les Vaudevey 1999 Domaine Laroche
One of the 17 prized Premiers Crus in Chablis, Les Vaudevey is the steepest and stoniest of all, producing 100% Chardonnay wines that marry an aromatic softness of fruit to a firm, minerally intensity of flavour. Domaine Laroche owns 10 of the 30 hectares in Les Vaudevey and his selections are deemed to be on the level of the more exalted Grands Crus. 1999 was an excellent year and this lovely wine is now drinking at its best, showing the true ripeness and quality of the vineyard and the vintage.

Red Wines

1997 Rosemount Estate Mountain Blue
In Australia, Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon grapes have been blended together with great success for many years. Mountain Blue was made by Philip Shaw, the chief winemaker at Rosemount, from grapes grown at high altitude at Mudgee in New South Wales. It has a deep ruby colour, ripe mulberry fruit character and well-integrated oak flavours from extended ageing in French and American oak barrels. This wine is a fine example of this traditional Australian blend.

Chateau Pichon Longueville Comtess De Lalande 1997
The larger of the two Second Growth Pichon-Longueville estates in Pauillac, Pichon-Comtesse, as it is known, is famous for its seductive suppleness of flavour and intrinsic elegance of style. The high percentage of Merlot in the vineyard brings an early ripeness to the wine while Cabernet Sauvignon assures it of a long life. The 1997 vintage, very successful for Pichon-Comtesse, is now showing particularly well.

Warre's Twenty Year Old Tawny
Warre's is the oldest British Port house, dating back to 1670 and still in family hands. A Tawny Port is one that matures in barrel over many years, losing its dark ruby colour in the process.

White Wines

Kloster Eberbach Riesling Kabinett 2003 Rheingau
A lively light yellow with green tints. In taste, a fine fruity bouquet reminiscent of yellow fruit and peach, ripe fruit on the palate and harmonious with a soft, dry finish.

Montagny 1er Cru 2002
Fullish yellow with light green tints, ripe fruit on the nose with a touch of hazelnuts, rounded and pleasantly fruity on the palate, attractively dry finish. Best at between two and four years old.

Red Wines

Chateau Cissac 1998 Cru Bourgeois Haut Medoc
Cissac is one of the Medoc’s finest Cru Bourgeois.

Nipozzano Riserva 2001 Chianti Rufina Docg Frescobaldi
Lumious deep purple colour with bitter cherry and blackcurrant taste. Quite powerful on the palate with a richness of fruit and spice flavours, balanced by firm tannins and a ripe but dry finish.

Fullish yellow with light green tints, ripe fruit on the nose with a touch of hazelnuts, rounded and pleasantly fruity on the palate, attractively dry finish. Best at between two and four years old.

Dr Loosen Qualitatswein Dr L Riesling 2003
The wines of the Mosel are the most elegant in Germany, as its highly terraced vineyards are benefited from the sun’s rays reflected in the river Mosel and from the warmth maintained by the slate soil. They have a pale colour, a charming aroma of citrus fruits and white peaches, and a flavour that is refreshingly fruity with both a roundness and a lively acidity.

Red Wines

Chateau Coufran Haut-Medoc 1998
Known as "the Pomerol of the Medoc" due to the 85% proportion of Merlot in the vineyards, Chateau Coufran is always very deep in colour and packed with fruit, but does not have the hard edge of certain Medocs, with their high proportion of Cabernet. Nevertheless, such is the level of natural concentration of fruit, that it ages extremely well. The colour of the 1998 is very intense, the nose full of blackcurrant fruit and the palate mouthfilling and quite robust. By 2003, the full qualities will be apparent and it will continue to improve thereafter.
