Lightbulb LX (CPH-)ZRH-HKG F Class May 2008 w/pix link

Dear all,

Sorry for the belated Swiss First Trip Report, which took place in mid-May! Unfortunately I had been busy lately and did not get the time to write this short report. Not sure if I will write a detail report, but a relatively abbreviated report. Swiss Air Lines International is simply another amazing airline, and the service was almost flawless from check-in to the first class lounge, and then to onboard service. Service was almost flawless! The food onboard the ZRH to HKG flight was amazing, but the intra-European flight was very disappointing, especially compared with its stellar first class intercontinental flight and even compared to other major airlines, such as Austrian, BA and Lufthansa, and the cold meal from CPH to ZRH was simply cheap-looking and lacked business class quality.

I flew the following flights:
May 14, 2008; Wednesday
LX 1271 CPH-ZRH Lv1445 Arr1630 Airbus A320-200 HB-IJK
Connect to
LX 138 ZRH-HKG Lv2245 Arr1640+1 Airbus A340-300 HB-JMB

Check-in: My day began from Copenhagen and the check-in at Copenhagen was surprisingly not affiliated with SAS, the main Star Alliance carriers at Copenhagen. While other Star Alliance airlines, such as LH, use SK check-in, Swiss has its own check-in counters. The premium class line was empty and I was checked-in quickly.

Lounge:
As a Star Alliance gold passenger, I used the Scandinavian Lounge, which was fairly busy at the noon hours with a number of late international flights and a bank of European flights. There was a cold spread with bread, and Asian cup noodles were also available. Since I had a filling breakfast, I skipped the food offering and had a glass of iced cola.

At Zurich, I had a long period of transit time, which was designed to enjoy the recently renovated Swiss First/HON Circle lounge at Zurich, which was just amazing. I arrived around 5:30pm at the lounge, and the receptionists welcomed me immediately, and asked if I wanted to head to downtown Zurich for a few hours, or wanted a dayroom to take a nap, which I chose eventually. Well everyone was friendly and I simply went to the restaurant for a light supper since the food on the CPH-ZRH flight was pretty unfulfilling. There was a full dinner menu offered, which I forgot to jog down the full details. I had an asparagus cream soup to start, which was magnificent, and then a Seared king prawns on vegetable paella dish, which was equally amazing. After dinner, I went to the Internet booth for replying some emails and surfing the net a bit. I also took advantage of the empty lounge and took many photos. The lounge was not huge like LH First Class Terminal, but was sufficient for relatively smaller amount of passengers. There was a separate buffet area for those who did not wish to go to restaurant, and there was a number of hot dishes (Tortellini, Vol au vent, and rice), as well a cold spread of salad, appetizers, and amuse bouche. There was a full bar, as well as a number of champagnes, and I had a glass of Tattinger Rose champagne. The whole lounge was well kept. I used the day room to take a short nap before the long flight, which was relatively simple. There was mood lighting, and a shower attached to the dayroom. Bulgari toiletries were used at the lounge. The bed was a relatively simple mattress with pillows and blankets like those used on the plane itself. The size was a bit too small and the bed was not very comfortable, but good enough for a cat nap. I took a shower around 9pm, and then headed out to the lounge for another glass of champagne and some small bites.

Boarding:
For the short CPH-ZRH flight, boarding began late, but the boarding only took eleven minutes to complete, so we were on time. To give Swiss credit, it was so far the only intra-European flight that some kinds of pre-takeoff service were offered, other than the usual newspapers. We got a choice of natural or sparkling bottled mineral water and also a wet napkin.

At 10pm, we were all invited to meet at the entrance and we were taken to Pier E by a private luxury van. We still had to meet up with the general crowd for security in entering Pier E, but I guess it saved some hassles. Pier E was fairly quiet, as a number of late flights were in the midst of boarding or near complete. Only one jetbridge was used, but boarding was very orderly and premium boarding was enforced. The flight was fairly full in all cabin glasses and F had only one empty seat this evening. Despite on time boarding, we had to wait for a few late connecting passengers, so the door remained opened till 11:06pm (not to mention the connecting bags were also loaded). Unlike most airlines (well CX used to serve amuse bouche during boarding on long haul flights), Swiss offered an amuse bouche service during boarding – not to mention some warmed bites - Cheese quiche, sliced lamb on toast, and deep fried crab ball with mango salsa, and of course, amenity kits, pajamas, and menus were also passed out. The two F/As were very efficient and friendly. The purser also took the time to talk to each first class passenger, informing us the delay, the flying time (we should arrive on time even with the slight delay), and a big welcome. Despite being a late flight, everything was served efficiently without feeling the service being rushed.

Flight information:
For the short flight, flying time was an hour and twenty-seven minutes with a cruising attitude of 39,000feet. We pushed back at 2:50pm, and slowly taxied toward R/W22R, and we took off after a Blue Line Fokker 100 F-GNLH took off at this beautiful day at Copenhagen. We lifted off at 3:02pm, and the short flight had us beginning descent at 3:50pm, and we landed on R/W14 at 4:29pm.

For LX 138, we finally pushed back at 11:08pm, and taxied towards R/W34. With little traffic (since most of LX last bank intercontinental flights had already taken off), we lifted off this starry night at 11:18pm, and this Airbus A340-300 certainly took its time to climb to 33,000feet after passing Austria, and did not reach 39,000feet till we crossed Lanzhou, China. Here was our routing: Bregenz-Salzburg-330-Wachau-Boden-Bratislava-Cana-S of Kiev-Dnepropetrowsk-Ashtrahan-365-N Coast of Caspian Sea-Aral-370-Urumqi-Xining-Lanzhou-390-Guiyang-HKG.

Meal Service:
For the intra-European flight, the meal was very underwhelming, especially compared to the later international flight. The cold plate was very light, but I guess it was a non-meal hour. I was surprised not even bread rolls were offered. Description of the meal: Entrée – pate en croute, coleslaw, shrimp with red, yellow, and green pepper coulis, sundried tomato, olives, and artichoke filled with cream cheese, Swiss cheese on brown bread with apple sauce, toasted Grissini, and Mango Pudding with strawberry sauce.

LX 138: I was totally blown away with the high quality of the meal service. (This particular trip really spoiled me with amazing food from Qatar Airways first.) Swiss food catered out from Zurich was simply restaurant quality and nothing was cheap about it. It even beats Cathay Pacific and Singapore Airlines, and on par with All Nippon Airways. Each dish was served from trolley and even this late night departure did not stop Swiss from offering a filling hot meal. Nobody should skip the meal. Each table was setup individually and the bread basket featured wheat, white, loaf, crackers, & dark bread, and then the appetizer was rolled out with a hearty selection of duck and asparagus terrine, scallop, mozzarella cheese, tomato on pesto sauce, Balik salmon, and a cucumber roll filled with cream cheese. The appetizers are amazingly fresh and tasty. It went well with my choice of Riesling. For main course, the special of the day was a Guinea Fowl with mixed vegetables and egg noodles, and I decided to give it a try. It was just amazing and the meat was moist and not overcooked. This kind of food (not to mention service) was definitely five-star. After entrée, a selection of Swiss cheese and fresh fruit was rolled out. I had a couple of light cheeses (which the F/A selected for me), and fruit basket featured apples, oranges, pears, bananas, plums, and grapes. Following cheese, I could not resist the warm ruburb cake with a strawberry salad and ice cream. Not to mention some Sprungli chocolate to finish off the meal.

Around 2pm Hong Kong local time, the lights were turned on again, and a breakfast was served. The trolley rolled out with fruit plate, yogurt, and breakfast bread & pastries. The fruit plate features melon, cantaloupe, pineapple, orange, and grapes, and I had a tub of strawberry yogurt, and the breakfast pastries feature croissants, brioches, raisin twist rolls, wholemeal, and multigrain rolls. My only minor complaint was that there should be a separate cold cut, cereal, and yogurt service like Lufthansa. Now it was a bit like cramming everything into your table. Just a minor point though! The food was fresh and the breads were great. Egg dish today was a egg filled crepes with veal sausages and tomato and spinach. I felt the portion can be slightly heartier and there should be a second choice of hot entrées (Business class has a choice between egg dish and sweet dish). I had a cup of peppermint tea ending this wonderful breakfast.

Food was definitely five star with Swiss international first class, and in between meals, there was a selection of soups, salad, cheese and fruit, but nobody took part with any of this service. However, I sort of wish that there were little bit of light snacks setup in the cadenza section. Breakfast should be more spread out, but other than those minor points, the meal was very filling and high quality. This definitely is what first class meal should be like.

Amenities and Bed Turn Down service:
There was a formal bed turn down service on the flight from Zurich to Hong Kong, and the bed was lined with mattresses, full-sized pillows, as well as duvet. I slept very well after dinner, and had a full six to seven hours sleep till breakfast. The seat was very comfortable. Although LX first class seats on the Airbus A340 was not the latest generation, the seat was very comfortable in takeoff & landing, lounging and sleeping position. The fabric used was nice, and the only thing lacking was perhaps privacy screens like the new generation of first class seats. For amenities, an amenity kit was passed out, as well as pair of slippers and pajamas.

Arrival:
Our flight landed on R/W25R at 4:37pm, and we parked at one of the preferred gates at Hong Kong, Gate 1, which was very close to immigration and customs ten minutes later. Swiss always uses the preferred gate, unlike Lufthansa, which used those high numbered gates, which required a train ride. There was no escort service, but HON Circle members were welcomed by ground staffs though. For Hong Kong resident like myself, the service was not quite necessary. I used the e-channel, and bags were out at 5pm.

Conclusion:
I really did not have much to add, but Swiss First is definitely an excellent experience, from check-in to lounge, and then onto the plane, and onto arrival. Everything was perfect, just like what a first class service should be. I highly recommend Swiss to everyone.

THANK YOU !!

For your TR

I have a trip coming up in oct from HKG with LX, I read that first class pax are entitled to use the wings ( from CX ? ).

For your own good don't even try AF first class, because when you try QR then LX CX and SQ or NH there is no way for you to be happy with AF.

Again tks a lot.

Thanks for the report Carfield.

I'm glad to see the standards in Swiss First are as good as they were when I flew with them to BKK/SIN back in 2003. That flight was simply magical (especially being the only person in F on an MD-11!).

Regards

lme etc etc

Thanks for the report. I'm looking to try to book a first class trip using united miles in the future (U.S. to Europe) and based on your report will try to get one direction on swiss. Sounds like it was a great experience.

Thanks for the trip report especially the pics of the LX F lounge in ZRH as those are the first pics I have seen. It looks much better than the old lounge!

Good TR, However by your pictures and the meny you posted I fail to see how LX is better than SQ/CX/NH.

Firstly on a HKG flight how can they not offer any chinese options?

The menu is pretty normal and boring. The breakfast is worst. It is just not as exciting as the Asian airline.

Can't believe they serve Lipton tea in F Class! With the TEA Bag in there. Should be loose leave tea in F Class!

The Salt and Pepper grinder. Actually the most classy way to do it is a big grinder and offered to you by the FA (like what CX does)

It might taste better than it looks but the presentation is a bit so so....

Glad you still had a good flight.

Thanks from me, too Carfield. This was a labour of love - did you paste it from a WP? I'd hate to type this all in a FT post then lose it as sometimes happens.

Will read it fully when I have more time!

Well considering there are about 700 airlines then the fact that LX is only beaten by those 3 is great in my opinion
