KE TR C Class TPE-ICN-LAX 30-Dec.-2007

Hey F-T community! How are you all. I am sorry to delay the publishing of this. Once I returned, I have some family matters to attend to, my grandmother passed away, and then I had to move back in to School... so without further delay, here it the TR:

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Pre-Trip Background: I have been in Korea for the past 6 months on a University Exchange Program to Yonsei University. The end has finally arrived I booked this back in October. I was looking around for the cheapest options from ICN-MSP, and the following TR's is the cheapest routings that I came up with and were in C, but still many hundreds of $ cheaper than the cheapest econ. ticket to MSP from ICN that I could find.

Trip-Stats:

Purchased on 27-October-2007
Price Paid:$1,188.66 C OW fare

Flight Information:
Korean Air flight 692
Departs Taipei/Taoyuan at 13:08
Arrives Seoul/Incheon at 16:36

Type Aircraft: Airbus A300-600R
Reg: HL7297
Seat: 8A
Class: Prestige Class

Preflight:
I woke up at 8:25 am and decided against taking a shower, as I would like to take a shower in an airport for the first time ever ahh the wonder of great service At 9:05 am, the driver that I had hired promtly showed up to collect me to take me to the airport bus stop, this he allowed free of charge because he felt great that I tipped him 8 dollars ontop of the 55$ charge for the trip from Airport to downtown. The traffic was almost non-existant. I showed up at the airport bus station at the CKS Taipei main bus terminal at the CKS train station. I then boarded the bus at 9:15 am and was off to the airport. I then arrived at Taoyuan Airport at 10:15 am and was at the counter by 10:20 am. I was a bit pissed that the Korean Air Counters didnt open until 10:35, so I had to... STAND as there was nowhere else to sit, as the seats nearby were all taken up by a huge korean tour group that was returning to Korea from a trip in Taiwan. Finally, at 10:35 the counters opened. I was then taken personally to the Business Class line and was the first person to check in. I noticed that CI , China Airlines, was handling the check-in for Korean Air. The check in process went extremely slow as the agent had to "look up" the airline code and actual flight numbers for my two non korean air connecting flights even though I personally told her two times the code for US Air and the flight numbers and showed a paper with them on it. It seemed to me their English capability was low. They didn't seem to understand too well what I was telling them or showing them. Finally they had to call to the SQ desk to get an agent to look up US AIR flights in the *A database and the numbers and ID code for US Air. This slowed the whole process down by about 10-15 minutes. Finally they heard back from an SQ agent and they were able to pull up my US res. on their system and had faxed the itin. to the CI agent and had all the info in Chinese on the paper for them. Theny they were finally able to process my bag tags directly to Minneapolis via Seoul, Los Angeles and Las Vegas. After everything was completed, I was then given both boarding passes for TPE-ICN and ICN-LAX and was "told" to make sure I check in with US for my boarding passes and show the baggage locator records to them to let them know I have baggages. I then headed off to the Immigrations lines. I went through very quickly. I then went directly towards the China Airlines Dynasty Class Lounge

China Airlines' (Taoyuan Airport) Dynasty Class Lounge: After clearing Immigrations and Security Check, I then went to the lounge. Upon entering the lounge, I was greeted very kindly and was then asked if I was needing a shower this morning. I said that it would be lovely. I was then escorted to the shower rooms. I was given Shower room #1. They gave me an amenity kit with towel, wash cloth, deo., toothbrush and toothpaste, and shower cap. I then undressed and got in the shower. I took a nice long shower. After showering, I then felt very, very refreshed. I then went out into the lounge to look for a seat. The lounge was starting to slowly fill up. I then found an open seat and took it. After that, I then went to see what they had on the offer for food. The selection was amazing:

Lounge food options:

Dimsum *
Beef Noodles *
Bake Potatoes
Seafood Noodles
Biscuts *
Wide Selection of Beverages *
Wide Selection of Deserts *
etc. etc.

*= Options that I took

+ Points:

Great Food
Very Warm Shower
Nicely decorated lounge

Boarding:

Finally, after awhile, at 12:27, I left the lounge. As I was leaving the lounge I was wished off well by the three front desk attendants and wished well on a safe journey and hope to see you again soon (I hope its true ) I then went towards Gate A5. Boarding was to commence in 5 minutes, but was coralled into the Business Class line immediately. Then, 3 minutes later.. boarding began. I handed my pass to the gate attendant. I was then personally helped down the jetway and a FA met me at the door to the jetway and took my coat and helped me down the jetway. She then hung up the coat and then was greeted by the other FA's personally. I then was helped with putting my two carry-ons in the overhead compartment. I then sat down

Inflight:

Upon Sitting down, I was then offered to a choice of snack and juice. I took two glasses of Guava Juice, which had by now become my new favourite, due to having it so much on KE by this point. I noticed by this point it was going to be a very private "flight", the C class was only 8 of 28 seats full. I felt like a king Before the Departure Formalities began, each FA at 12:56, we pushed back. After a bit of a taxi and waiting for some planes to land, it was finally our turn to take to the sky. We departed from runway 5(L?) Taoyuan has wierd runway numbering... 5L and 6L but only 2 runways?? wheres 5R and 6R??

Inflight Service: After getting airborne, once we reached about 10,000 feet, the FA's came around to take meal orders and passed out hot towels. A short while later, the FA's went about preparing to serve us C Class Passengers. They served Drinks and Peanuts. Shortly thereafter, I was brought the Meal that I ordered and a Chateau de Beauregard-Ducourt White Wine, Year 2005. After the Meal, I was give Fruit for dessert. After the meal, everything was promptly cleared away, then Duty-Free commenced. The meal service was just as good as the flight to Taipei.

After meal service, everything was cleared away...Most of the flight was extremely bumpy. After being airborne for 2 hrs., we began to descend for Seoul/Incheon. After landing, it was a very long taxi over to gate 34. After deplaning, I then followed the signs to the transfer security check. Upon breezing through this... I then went straight to the KAL Prestige Class Lounge. The service was just as good as before, with wide selections of food, drinks, snacks, etc. etc. The flight landed at 16:36 Layover began at 16:45 in the lounge and lasted until.. 18:55.

KE TR C Class part two

Korean Air flight 11

Type of Aircraft: Boeing 747-400
Reg: HL7492
Seat: 17A (in the UD)
Class: Prestige Class

Preflight:
I ate some good food in the lounge and had a shower again at 18:00, because i'd be travelling many hours ahead of me without a shower.
I then left the KAL Lounge at 18:55 and went towards gate 28, only to find out that the Aircraft wasnt even at the gate and boarding was delayed until 7:30 due to the Aircraft that was flying our flight was still in the hangar getting something looked at that still was being looked at all day.... finally at about 7:15, the plane was towed to the gate but it was dark, no lights on at all inside or outside except for red and green nav lights... then once it was attached to the gate and GPU, the lights inside the plane turned on an then the cargo and baggage LD4 containers began to load and the catering services to plane started and at 7:30, boarding began..
Business and First Class were allowed to board first together. Upon going down the stairs one level, must go through "extra security check" required for entering the US. Once this was complete, I then boarded and grabbed a few papers at the door and then had my coat taken and then directed upstairs and taken to my seat personally and the FA's put my carry-ons in the bin next to my seat and up above. After I was situated in 17A, I was then offered a Cocktail or Champagne and a snack. I took a Cocktail, wow did it taste wonderful!!! Finally, at 19:50, we began pushback and then the Safety Video began. It was in Korean,Chinese,Japanese, and English. Finally, after a bit of taxi, we got airborne with a departure to the north. Once we were airborne, we did a spiral climb to 12,000 feet directly over the airport, due to the DMZ no-fly zone. Once we reached 12,000 feet we then straightened out and then flew directly east towards Japan and then southeast a bit towards Tokyo. Once we got to about 15,000 feet, they began meal service. I was given the menu and hot towel and a pre dinner cocktail. Yummy again . Here is the Menu:

Wine List

Champange

I then drifted into and out of awakeness throughout the rest of the flight. About 2 hours or so before landing, a "Breakfast" was served:

Whole wheat swedish, croissant, apricot danish all with selection of jam and butter

Coffee/Tea/Green Tea

After this was served, then about 1 hour before landing this was served:

Continental Breakfast

Seasonal Fresh Fruit
Yoghurt Selection

Thought this was odd... maybe they do this to get rid of the left overs so nothing has to be burned/thrown away upon arrival...

Finally, after about 10 hrs airborne, we began our very lengthy descent into the clutted SoCaL airspace. As we were descending, we sailed right by Downtown San Fran and I could see the Golden Gate Bridge and the first glimpse of us in over 11 months. Finally we flew east towards the desert and then south towards Mexico sorta and then flew right over downtown LA and landed on runway 24R at approx. 13:10 give or take a few min. if i recall correctly. We then taxiied off the runway where we sat for a bit, and then I saw a US Customs truck drive up to the plane and then followed us along on the taxiway all the way to the TBIT terminal. We also had to sit in a penalty box area for a bit for a dang gate to open. That wait was about, 15-20 minutes if i remember correctly. Finally we started to taxi again and then taxiied to the south side of TBIT, where we got Gate 103 or 104, I think. The engines were shut down in "The Alley" and then we were schlepped around a bit by a tug to park and dock at 103 or 104. Then the seat belt light went out and the FAs and Purser came around and thanked each person individually for flying with KE today. Then I deplaned and was full of tears. I was really glad to be back, but also sad to have left Korea. This is the end of a wonderful experience. Looking forward to it again, and definately, will i give my travel $$ again to KE for C or Y service. KE has really taken my heart. I loved the wonderful top-notch service recieved on KE all throughout the experience. I will not be filing a TR for LAX-LAS-MSP on US Air, as it was nothing to write home about. If you have any ?'s about my experience on KE, feel free to ask.

Thanks

Thanks for a great report!

Korean Air seems to offer a high-quality product and I am actually surprised that the Airbus A300-600R offers a well-maintained cabin.

Thanks,
Carfield

I was a bit surprised as well. It seems they have upgraded the A300-600R with A330 Interior. minus PTV's however.

Nice report BIMMERKID2. You don't see too many SkyTeam TRs on here and it is always nice to see what other airlines have to offer.

As to the pics. I prefer to click on the links as it doesn't slow down the page loading when you have a slow connection.

Look at this TR

http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/showthread.php?t=772891

Yes it was cheaper..

Ex-

ICN-NRT-MSP or ICN-ORD-MSP were both circa. $2000-$2500, one way in economy. at the cheapest... as opposed to.. >>>

ICN-TPE paid $311.44+10,000 KE SKYPASS miles to upgrade to Prestige, spend a few days in TPE sightseeing, thenTPE-ICN-LAX all in business class paid only $1188.66 for that segment.. then LAX-LAS-MSP with US AIR $165.40in econ. total for all this.... ~$1,665.50 as opposed to a one way ticket from ICN-ORD-MSP with KE and NW in econ. which they wanted $2,325.50 or Air Canada and NW ICN-YVR-YWG-MSP of $1,850 one way in Econ. In the end, the chance of flying Business Class won out. ^
