Falling bolt tracked to jumbo jet's wing

Singapore Airlines has revealed one of its Boeing 747-400 planes is missing a bolt matching the description of an 11.5-centimetre-long bolt that smashed into the roof of a Sydney man's home yesterday morning.

Omigod. Now we have another incident on the management's desks. I wonder what sort of compensation the man will be getting...

aren't airlines suppose to have an aviation engineer inspect the entire aircraft for such things before it takes off?

That would have been freaky to know if you were on the plane. Looks like the bolt was sheared off.

The last major incident involving bolts that I can recall was when a supporting bolt failed in-flight and caused the engine to fly off an El Al cargo flight. Ugh. That creeps me out.

I guess the reduced weight would save fuel!

"The affected aircraft will undergo a "wide-ranging inspection" before returning to service, the airline said"

We can all blame this incident for any change in aircraft from a B744 to B773/B772, especially so for our folks here who experienced it most on SQ866/SQ865.

No Sky Suite, No Space Bed...and the list goes on....

Plane that lost bolt back in air

A SINGAPORE Airlines jumbo has undergone extensive repairs and will be flown for the first time today after a bolt fell from a wing and landed on a Sydney house.

I didn't know the Airbus 345 is considered a "jumbo".

...and it must have been a big diversion to be passing SYD on its flight between SIN and LAX/EWR

Guess in Northern wintertime, they take the Antarctic route. Do let me know when they start that route. I need the miles.

SIN-EWR (Arctic) = 9535 miles
SIN-EWR (Antarctic) = 15323 miles
