Departing Perth

The chauffer arrived in a timely fashion about 3 hours before the flight was due to leave.

At this time of night (about 8pm) the international terminal at Perth airport is full of people. The queues for economy for both Emirates and Qantas were enormous. If travelling economy, it’s worthwhile arriving early for your flight to ensure that you miss the (worst of the) queues and you get the seat that you desire. We had purchased various items during our stay, and we had also acquired some Christmas gifts – hence our luggage being full. However, we were not prepared for the following – a nice little loophole if you are travelling in Economy!

The baggage allowance in Economy is 20Kg, however you are allowed an additional 10Kg without charge after which point you will be charged a hefty excess per kilo (I can’t remember what it is, but it’s a fairly high charge). If you are travelling in Business Class, you are allowed 30Kg; however, there is no additional 10Kg allowance, which effectively means there is no advantage to travel business class in terms of checked-in baggage allowance. Business Class customers are allowed an extra 5Kg of hand baggage, but from my point of view, if you are travelling in business class for leisure purposes, you do not necessarily want to be carrying around a lot of hand luggage if you can avoid it – particularly if you have to transfer planes halfway through your journey.

Perth airport is small, and security, customs and immigration (or whatever the departing formality is called – emigration?) can sometimes be closed if you arrive too early and/or there are no other flights due to leave. They are quite strict about cabin baggage and size/weights etc, so don’t be surprised if you are collared by security before you have got to the immigration process.

It’s a small airport, and security in all Australian airports is tight, so be prepared for a thorough checking. If you are a single male, or look as if you might be a single male, be prepared to be pulled over by the security staff checking for explosives. I’ve been through Perth airport about 5-6 times, and each time either myself or my companion (being male!) have been pulled aside for further checks.

The Lounge at Perth

The lounge that Emirates use in Perth airport is the Malaysian Airlines Lounge. This is a small lounge, capable only of seating those travelling in Business and First Class – if there are lots of Gold Card holders on your flight – this lounge may be a fraction busy!

There was a reasonable selection of snacks and light bites (sandwiches, cheese, biscuits and fruit), alongside coffee, tea and alcoholic and soft drinks. A small selection of magazines and papers was also available. The lounge was not very well staffed, maybe two or three staff in total. The lady on the reception counter was also working in the lounge, and after about an hour there was quite a lot of used glasses, plates and general rubbish in the lounge. It was also quite difficult to manoeuvre through the lounge as it was so full. Having said all that, the lounge was comfortable and pleasant enough.

Boarding

Boarding is completed via a single bridge gate. All the gates in the international departure lounge (and in fact the domestic terminal) are open to the main concourse – there is no separate holding area for passengers. Since there are only 5-6 gates, and they are hardly ever used concurrently, this does not prove an issue. The call was announced in person by the lounge receptionist. Most passengers had actually boarded by the time we were called, and we made our way to the gate and straight onto the Airbus 340-300. It was the same type of aircraft as before, only this time we were not located in the bulkhead seats, we were in a middle row. This proved to be a complete non-issue as there was plenty of space available, even with the seat in front reclined.

The Flight; Perth – Dubai

We were offered Champagne, orange juice, water or a beverage of our choice before departure.

We were accompanied by some rather rowdy children who were not in the control of their parents. The children took to throwing rubbish all over the floor and just being generally uncouth! However, after about 2 hours they fell into what seemed like a food-induced coma, and we didn’t hear much from them from that point – thank you Emirates for noise cancelling headphones and ear-plugs, they should come as standard on all aircraft!

I neglected to mention earlier that Emirates distributed hot towels before every meal service, and bottled water was available throughout all flights.

Food and Drink

We were offered a light snack (a choice of 2 appetizers, a Salad, a choice of 3 main courses, 1 dessert, cheese, biscuits and fruit, and tea, coffee and chocolate); a savoury snack (Sandwiches, Hot Savoury snacks, Cookies and Beverages); and breakfast (Fruit juice, assorted fruit or yoghurt, a mixed grill, vegetable frittata, or omelette with Gruyere cheese, followed by a cheese selection, a choice of bread throughout and beverages).

Again, the food was superb, and the coffee was very nice (the coffee served on Emirates was nice and strong, and had a unique flavour which made a difference from the normal airline coffee).

In-flight Entertainment

This does change on a monthly basis, and does vary dependent on the route that is flown. There were some problems getting it started, but once it was going, there were no further problems. Unfortunately, because of the change, some of the films that I had planned to watch on the way back were unavailable. Bad planning on my part I’m afraid!
