Qatar J class – NBO DOH PER DOH NBO – lives up to its 5 star title

Qatar J class – NBO DOH PER DOH NBO – lives up to its 5 star title

So, I had a work trip to Perth that needed to be done, and I usually fly SAA via JNB. When the airfares came back for SA, EK and KL, they all seemed a bit on the high side. My travel agent recommended QR to me. All I knew of QR was that they were a Skytrax 5 star airline, they were going to become part of One World in 2014, and that the 787 was schedule to fly on the DOH PER route. The airfare came, and I was sold.

Unfortunately, the 787 was cancelled due to the global issues involving it, so the 777 had been put back on the Perth route. Oh well, first world problems. I was looking forward to the 1-2-1 configuration as opposed to 2-2-2.

NBO DOH
QR 533 – A320
SEAT 3A
ETD 1755 ETA 2255

Online check in for QR opens 36 hours prior to departure. I checked in, and managed to change my seats. I arrived at JKIA at 3.45 pm, and cleared security. There was a separate line for QR J class, but it was not too well managed. I waited around 5 minutes, before I was called up. Check in was quick, and I had to ask to have my bag priority tagged. They used a yellow QR ‘VIP’ tag that seemed to work.

Immigration took another 5 minutes, and I was in the common First-class lounge in no time. This is a shared lounge, and when I was there, passengers from EK, and SA were also using the lounge. The lounge is adequate with free WiFi, hot and cold snack options, and a decent bar that you can help your self at.

At 5.35 pm, an announcement was made that QR 532 was ready for boarding. Beating the scrum from the lounge, I cleared security, and entered a holding area where all passengers were waiting. It was very hot and stuffy in here. I waited at least 15 minutes, before boarding was announced for J class passengers.

Today we were boarding via stairs, so we had to walk down the side stairs of the air bridge, across the tarmac, and up the front stairs onto our A320 for today’s flight to Doha.

J class has 12 seats in 3 rows of 2-2. Today’s load was 11 pax.

At the seat was a large pillow, blanket, menu folder and a soft bag with socks, eye mask, earplugs and comb. The quality of the eye mask and socks were excellent. Later on slippers and a Salvatore Ferragamo amenity kit (with a lip balm, eau de toilette and hand cream) were also handed out. There was a black ‘male’ and white ‘female’ version of the kit.

As the plane was boarding, pre-departure beverages were distributed. The crew offered a choice of laban (yoghurt based drink), water or orange juice. I asked for a glass of champagne, and was told it will take a few minutes, as it was not chilled. When it was served, it was poured seat side. The crew were apologetic, saying that it should be well chilled after take off.

Newspapers were also distributed, and once everyone was on board, the CSD greeted each J class passenger individually. At the same time, the first of many scented towels were distributed. We had a choice of a hot or cold towel, and they were luxuriously thick and beautifully scented.

Today we were on an older A320, so there was no personal IFE. There were drop down screens, where the safety briefing was aired.

While we were taxiing, our drinks order for after take off were taken. I asked for another glass of champagne.

We took off at around 1820. As soon as the seat belt sign was switched off, the crew swung into action, and closed the curtain dividing J and Y class. My champagne was poured seat side, and we were all given a ramekin of warmed nuts. I then perused the menu for this evening’s flight to Doha.

In the menu folder, were three menu’s – Dining, Beverages and Wine.

NBO DOH continued

I decided to go with the smoked salmon and the lamb curry.

Shortly a tray was brought with the salad, and smoked salmon. I noted that a linen tablecloth was laid down, but the napkin was not cloth. The cutlery was wrapped in the napkin.

A choice of still and sparkling water was offered. I saw bread being served to row 1 and 2, but we were not offered well into the meal. There were two cabin crew working in J. One was in the galley, and the other served. No trolley was used.

Whenever wine was offered, I was asked to taste it, and then if I liked it, it was poured.

With the salmon, I had a glass of the sauvignon blanc. It worked well, and wine was constantly topped up. The salmon starter was nice.

With the lamb, I changed to the Shiraz. There were 3 tiny morsels of lamb in my dish. That was disappointing. But the dish was spicy and tasty.

I continued with the Shiraz, and had the cheese plate. The cheese was all Kenyan, made by a well respected family – Brownes. The shiraz and the cheese worked well.

At this point, we were a good 2 hours into the flight. A 2nd hot towel was distributed with Godiva Chocolates.

Sun set

The seat was comfortable. It was very hard to get out from the window seat, without asking your neighbour in the aisle to stand up. The seat pitch was limited, and when the seat in front was reclined, you had very little personal space. The seat was good for a flight of less then 5 hours.

The bathroom was clean throughout the flight, and had Molton Brown products, as well as a good supply of dental and shaving kits.

I did see one passenger be given a personal video system. Not sure if you had to ask for them. I had my iPad, so was happy. I also snoozed a bit.

At the top of decent, a 3rd hot towel was distributed. The flight purser thanked all the J class passengers individually for choosing Qatar. We landed in Doha around 11.00 pm.

As most people would know, Doha does not have air bridges, so all passengers need to be bussed to the terminal. There was a separate bus for J class passengers, and we were all taken to the Premium terminal.

Up next the Premium terminal at Doha.

Doha Premium Terminal

Premium Terminal

The Premium Terminal is only for J and F class passengers. If you ar QR Gold but in Y, you would go to the normal terminal and use the QR lounge there.

On arrival into the Premium Terminal, all passengers clear security, which was reasonably fast. You then enter into a duty free area, with escalators in the middle. Up you go, and you are met by several concierges, who check your boarding pass, and thendirect you to either the F or J lounge. There are shared facilities, which include a business centre, kids lounge including a gaming centre, prayer rooms and a cloak room.

The J lounge is massive. There are several dining areas, and bars. There are two buffet areas, which serve a variety of hot foods, soups, salads, breads and desserts.

There is also a separate deli, where sandwiches and salads are made to order.

There was a separate sushi station and several cafι’s from where tea and coffee was being served.

At either end of the lounge ate bathrooms. During peak times, these are not adequate, as there are a total of 6 showers. Each shower was tiny. There is not enough space for hand luggage. However the water was hot, and toiletries are L’Occitane. The bathrooms were spotless.

I tried several of the different food options, with a glass of a Sauvignon Blanc. Flight announcements are not made, so you need to know when you should head down to the gates.

Overall it is a very impressive lounge for J class.

I headed down to the gates. Flights to Australia and the US have a separate security screening area. Once I cleared this, it was back on board a bus, and off to our waiting 777.

Smart move on trying QR.

I flew them a few weeks ago. Agreed the bathroom facilities in the premium lounge are woefully inadequate. They need twice the facilities, at least.

6 showers for several hundred passengers was quite pathetic. Also not enough toilets, so men were queuing for up to 30 minutes to use the toilet.

So am I. They did say early 2014, but no concrete date announced yet.

DOH PER
QR 900 – 777-200LR
SEAT 5A
ETD 0130 ETA 1720

On board, and I was directed to my seat in the 2nd J class cabin. I noted that if you are QR Silver or Gold, and the flight is not full, the seat next to you is blocked. 3 out of my 4 flights, I had a spare seat next to me. On the 777 there are 8 rows 2-2-2.

Leg Room at bulkhead

On the seat was a blanket, large pillow, a soft bag with socks, eye mask, earplugs and comb, the menu folder and noise cancelling headphones. PDB was offered, and I had the champagne. This again was poured seat side.

Really good quality pyjamas were offered, as well as slippers and a Salvatore Ferragamo amenity kit (with a lip balm, eau de toilette and hand cream). I went to change into my pyjamas, and the bathrooms were rather large. Again they were always clean, and had Molton Brown toiletries in them and paper towels (no cloth towels).

A choice of hot or cold towels (towels are always served on an individual bamboo tray) was offered. I went for a cold one. Very refreshing.

Unfortunately we had a medical incident on board, and did not take off until well past 2.45 am. They off loaded the patient, and his friend, as well as their luggage.

During this time, we were asked what we wanted to eat and drink after take off. I opted not to eat, but asked for a glass of Shiraz.

Row 1 and 5 have the IFE TV located in between the seats (they pop out), so it cannot be used till after departure. All other rows have the TV in the back of the shell of the front seat, so this can be used immediately onboard. Also Row 1 and 5 miss out on additional storage, due to where the TV is stored.

Today’s dining menu was:

indulgence

tempting your palate

NOBU nasu miso

seasonal salad
mesclun leaves, poached salmon, cherry tomato, cucumber, sliced potato and ginger tomato salsa

classic arabic mezze
hummus, tabouleh and feta cheese served with arabic bread

The menu is very extensive for J class, and all QR flights offer dining on demand. On long haul flights, they don’t use a tray. Instead your table is set for you.

The drinks list was the same at NBO DOH, but the wines were different:

After a late take off, I was very tired, and decided it was time to sleep. There is a small storage area between the seats, where bottled water is to be found.

I asked for what I thought was a duvet, as I had seen several other passengers use them as duvets. Turns out they are mattress pads. The seat went completely flat and was very comfortable. Being near the toilet and galley, I did not hear any noise at all.

I slept for a solid 7 hours, and woke up feeling refreshed. I was offered a hot towel, and asked for my brunch order.

I started off with the raspberry and lime smoothie and freshly squeezed orange juice, as well as a black coffee.

This was followed with the selection of beetroot salmon and gravalax, smoked salmon and nori omelette with wasabi cream and the fresh fruits.

All the food was of good quality, and tasty. Each dish was served individually. Also a mixed individual bread bowl was offered to me.

The beetroot/salmon was offered in a bowl, which I found to be different, but the taste was good.

I watched a bit of the IFE. Qatar offer IFE on demand, with loads of movies, TV shows and music. The selection is decent.

At the top of decent, the cabin was cleared up. The CSD came by and thanked each passenger individually for flying with Qatar. Service in flight was excellent. It was individual and genuine.

On arrival into Perth, Y class passengers were held back. Immigration was a breeze. I waited around 12 minutes for my bag to come. I walked through Customs with out any issues, or bag scan, and I was out in Perth within 30 minutes of landing.

Overall, I was very impressed by QR. I would compare their seats to the EK F Skycruiser seats. Service, food and beverage offerings would beat most J class offerings out there, and many F class products as well. They lived up to their 5 star rating.

PER DOH

PER DOH
QR 901 – 777-300ER
SEAT 6A
ETD 2245 ETA 0510

Thanks to my friends at dinner. I had told them I had a flight at 10.45 pm, so they suggested I leave dinner at 9.30 pm, as Perth Airport is only 20 minutes away, and there is never any traffic in Perth. Bull***t. I get to Perth airport at 9.55 pm, and run in, to find there are no QR counters. I look and look again. Then I see one screen that says (Qatar help desk). As I approach it, a gentleman in a QR uniform approached me and says “Mr RWA? We have been waiting for you.” So I asked if I was too late, and he said “no, this is why you pay to fly business class”. I was checked in less than 2 minutes, and escorted to immigration. The queue was less then 10 minutes, a ‘random’ full body security scan (I was pulled out from the back of the queue, so this so ‘called fast track’ I was not going to complain about), and I was airside.

I had been ‘socialising’ with friends for the past 10 or so hours, with a long lunch at the new Beach Club at the Cottesloe hotel, followed by dinner at Deco, located at The Raffles Hotel. So I needed to use the facilities. A quick dash to the QR contracted lounge – The Malaysian Airlines lounge, where I was informed that the bathrooms are outside the lounge. I went out, and boarded the aircraft instead.

From the entire QR experience, the lounge at Perth was the biggest let down.

On board, and I was directed to my seat – 6A. I much preferred the non-bulk head seats, as there was more storage room, the TV screen was fixed, and it felt more private.

At the seat as usual was all of the QR lovely gear for the flight, and PJ’s were offered promptly. I was asked for a PDB, and went for the champagne. Off to the huge bathroom to change, and I was back seat side for my tipple of Lansen. Boarding was swift, and soon we were pushing back.

The good thing about the non-bulk head seats is that you can start using the IFE as soon as you are seated.

As soon as the seat belt signs came off, I was asked for a drink. I went with the Shiraz, and perused the menu for today’s flight:

main meal

tempting your palate

asparagus wrapped with smoked salmon
lemon and lime crθme fraiche

to commence

carrot and cumin soup
basil pesto and sea salt croutons

an individual selection of cured beef and salmon gravalax
waldorf salad

classic arabic mezze
hummus, tabouleh and roasted aubergine salad served with arabic bread

to follow

thyme and black pepper marinated chicken breast
sautιed potatoes, creamed sweet corn and rocket pesto

prawn machboush with rice
arabic spiced vegetables in tomato sauce

stir fried udon noodles with shitake and black mushrooms
pak choi and pumpkin in oyster sauce

on the side

main dishes are accompanied by your choice of condiments

cheese plate

cobram mature cheddar, capewickham brie and king island blue
date and walnut cake

sweet finale

plum pudding with vanilla ricotta
pistachio cream sauce

serendipity triple chocolate and vanilla ice cream
seasonal berries

selection of seasonal fresh fruits

bakery basket

multigrain, rye and whole meal rolls with cracked black pepper

breakfast

to revive

spirulina smoothie

freshly squeezed orange juice

to commence

toasted muesli

selection of seasonal fresh fruits
labneh

king smoked salmon with fennel, sun blushed tomato and herb salad
feta cheese and orange segments

to follow

scrambled eggs with tomatoes and chives
with sautιed mushrooms and peperonata

tomato and feta cheese omelette with grilled chicken sausage
mushroom ragout and creamed spinach

waffles with mixed berry compote
maple syrup

breakfast bakery basket

croissant, chocolate chip muffin, torpedo roll, brown and white toast

The wine and drinks menus were the same as DOH PER.

My table was dressed.

Having had a great day of eating and drinking, I decided to go for the palate tempter,

beef starter,

the cheese

and then the ice cream,

as well as a bread basket.

And then decedent Godiva Chocolates.

The food was fantastic. Well presented, great flavours, and professional served. All this was constantly washed down with the Shiraz. Could not complain. I was also asked if I wished to be woken up for breakfast. I said yes.

I noted that the white ‘duvet’ looking things were actually mattress pads. I had 4 in front of me, so used 2 to form a soft and comfortable mattress, grabbed the blanket and off to lala land I went.

There was some slight turbulence in flight, but overall a great nights sleep.

I woke up around 2.5 hours out of Doha. I waited, and there was no service, so rang the bell a few times. It took a god 15 minutes to get served. I was in no hurry, but this surprised me. As soon as I was attended to, service was back to the QR 5* standards.

I started off with an orange juice, followed by fruit and then smoked salmon. I was not hungry for a hot breakfast, and figured out there would be a chance in the lounge and my next flight. The bakery basket was very good, especially the choc chip muffins.

Once again, the CSD came around and thanked me for flying QR, as well as wishing a good flight to Nairobi. We landed on time, and off to the Premium terminal in a deducted bus for J class passengers.

Another excellent flight from QR. Well done.

Premium Terminal

There were many flights arriving when we did, so security took around 5 minutes, then up the escalators to the lounge. I needed a shower. I went to the first bathroom, where there was a queue to use the toilet and the showers. So I went to the second bathroom at the back of the lounge. Here there as no queue for the toilets, but a long one for showers. So back to the first bathroom, and I was number one in the shower queue. A shower became available after 15 odd minutes. The attendant cleaned it for me, and I was in. I felt new, and off I went to find some breakfast.

The lounge was busy this morning, but there were loads of staff clearing tables. I had a look at the buffet, and the usual breakfast items of scrambled eggs, sausages, waffles, pancakes, tomatoes, etc were there. I could not find any fresh fruit.

I sat down with some yoghurt, pancakes (they were very dry), and bircher muesli. A cup of coffee and orange juice later, I was off to the duty free shop for some last minute shopping.

Compared to DXB, the duty free choices here was not vast. Soon it was time to board the flight to Nairob

QR 532 – A320
SEAT 1A
ETD 0735 ETA 1250

After a short bus ride to the plane, we had to wait for a bus load of economy passengers to get on board. They should have used the rear stairs for Y class.

Once on board, I was directed to my seat. The bulkhead felt a lot less claustrophobic then row 3. The usual amenities were waiting at the seat for me. PDF was offered, and I went for the champagne, which was poured seat side. Newspapers were also offered.

This A320 had individual IFE, which was great, as my iPad was now low on things to watch.

We pushed back at around 8.00 am and were airborne shortly.

Today’s flight was serving breakfast. On offer was:

breakfast

to revive

passionfruit and papaya smoothie

freshly squeezed orange juice

to commence

selection of seasonal fresh fruits
fruit yoghurt

breakfast plate of gravlax, smoked duck breast and tomato and mozzarella skewer
pesto sauce

to follow

bell pepper and goats cheese tart
chicken sausage and sautιed spinach

vegetable omelette
rosti potatoes, chicken sausage with creamy mushrooms

arabic breakfast plate
labneh, grilled haloumi and shanklish cheese served with foul medames and tomato manakish

breakfast bakery basket

croissant, red cherry muffin, arabic bread, brown and white toast

relax and unwind
cappuccino, espresso, cafι latter, macchiato, american, decaffeinated

ceylon, ceylon spice chai, chamomile, decaffeinated, earl grey, jasmine, english breakfast, morrocan mint, oolong, rooibos and sencha green tea

The drinks and wine menu's were the same as NBO DOH.

I was actually feeling very hungry at this point. The lounge had been rushed due to the wait for a shower.

I started off with the usual bubbles, and orange juice. Then the fruit and salmon.

They had run out of the arabic breakfast plate, so I tried the omelette.

The mushrooms were so creamy - a delight.

My tray was brought with the two items to commence with,

Then the omelette. All QR meals are also served with Heinz Ketchup, Tabasco, and an assortment of mustards. This really helps you to flavour your meal how you like it.

Once again, QR delivered with food and service. The meal was over in under an hour. I got some duty free, had a kip, and we were on our way down into Nairobi.

We landed on time, and parked next to the other QR plane (that had an air bridge). The stairs were brought, a short walk from the plane, and we were inside JKIA. Immigration was fast. My bag was among the first 10 on the belt, and within 30 minutes of landing, I was on my way home.

Overall

Qatar offer a fantastic J class product. I have flown J on QF, KQ, SQ, EK, MH, LX, BA, SA, ET, AI, UM, AC, TC, KL, AF, AA, AN, OS, and F on EK, AI and MH. I was impressed foremost with their genuine service. The crew wanted to serve you.

The food and beverage choice was astounding, especially on the long haul flights. Unfortunately I did not do it any justice.

The IFE is good, noise cancelling headphones helpful. All the amenities, including amenity kits, PJ’s, slippers, etc were very welcomed. The bathrooms always clean. The many hot and cold towels that were offered.^

The Premium Terminal lived up to its name – Premium.

The down side was the small number of showers and toilets in the Premium Terminal. Also the leg room on the A320 was not great. It was okay for sitting, but to get out was a struggle from the window seat.

Well done QR. Hope you can keep it up, and not increase your airfares to ridiculous levels.

The way to go QR!

Kudos!

Quite unfortunate that they do not fly to BNE/SYD so slim chances for me trying them in the nearest future...

I've read that the night curfew at SYD deters QR from flying there. But SYD MEL is a short hop to catch QR from MEL. It is worth it.
