How I got pampered by Lufthansa (and Spanair) on my way to Israel

Rewind to about 6 weeks ago and I was sitting on my desk debating where to go for my upcoming vacation in November. I thought I had it all figured it out. A friend was going to Shanghai and I was supposed to tag along with him. At the last minute, a change of plans and I was back to square one. Oh well, life is unpredictable and one has to make the best out of every situation. Besides, I looked at the bright side - I saved about $100+ applying for a visa to China.

I always had a yearning to visit Israel and the country was in my "places to see before I die" list, so now was the perfect time to fulfill that desire. By the way, I had about 90,000 miles under UA Mileage + and this was a good excuse to burn them. Now, it is against my religion to redeem miles for a trip in Y (after all the sweat and blood that it took to get those suckers, the least I can do is pamper myself up front) so I debated whether to get a J or F roundtrip out of Europe to TLV. After all, 90,000 miles is not going to cut it for a rt from the US to the Middle East in J. I consulted with my good friend Carfield and he suggested that I do a F on LH. Well, the thought of experiencing the F Terminal in FRA was very tempting so I went ahead with it. Furthermore, I knew LH treated this route as a true intercontinental one with amenity kits and pajamas, so the decision was not that hard to make. I guess flying on OS and TK (I really wanted to try these two had I decided to fly in J) will be reserved for the distant future.

So next thing was to book the award tkt which will cost me 80,000 miles. I called the MP desk and got connected overseas. The agent was very polite but inefficient. I had to repeat myself several times that I wanted a F tkt from MAD to TLV using LH specifically. He said no problem and all that was needed was 55,000 miles. A red flag went up - I asked "are you sure that is a F tkt and not a J one?" he paused and put me on hold. Then he came back and said "Sir, F tkt requires 80,000 miles and I have seats on TK via IST". I thanked him and hung up. I tried calling again in the hopes of getting a more competent agent within the US so when the msg prompted me for an intl or dom itinerary I chose the dom one. I then was connected to a US agt and I asked if she could book me for an intl itinerary. She said no problem and in a blink of an eye the reservation was done on LH just as I wanted it.

I chose to leave out of MAD because at the time of booking the cheapest fare into Europe was there via AA. The tkt cost me about $585 RT with taxes out of SFO and since this year all my travel is concentrated on AA (I am going for EXP status) there was no other choice. To alleviate the pain of riding in Y, I decided to use 15,000 miles to upgrade the domestic return from MIA-SFO to F. AA transcon in F is top notch so I knew that at least I would end this long trip with a happy note.

I will go ahead and skip the details of my outbound on AA since it was rather uneventful. I took the red eye from SFO-MIA and then waited for about 11 hrs @ MIA for my dept. to MAD. Good thing that I decided to stop by my parents' place and crash.

A few things worth commenting on my layover and trip from MIA. The new side of the terminal was functional but it is a long walk if you need to go from one end to E concourse or to the other end of the D gates. Catering in Y has marginally improved with the addition of cheese and crackers and a baked dessert instead of a pre-packaged one (which I received at the beginning of the year flying ORD-FRA). No peanuts of tidbits with the beverage service though.

Lunch AA MIA-MAD

Arrival into MAD Barajas was uneventful and the new T4 terminal feels pretty spacious and modern. Having said that, don't count on being able to walk from it to the other terminals because T4 is a whole separate complex of its own and the distance is far. If you must connect, you need to take a bus that will take about 10 minutes. Once you arrive into T4, you need to take a tram that will deposit you at Immigrations and Customs.

Once I got off the bus at T2 I made my way to Spanair's tkt counter through a series of escalator and elevator rides. The J counter was manned by two ladies and the agent that waited on me did her job efficiently. She explained to me where the VIP lounge was located and wished me a good trip. Going through security was quick and soon I was on my way to the lounge.

SPANAIR VIP LOUNGE

JX's VIP lounge in MAD is located by gate D60 and is about 800 m2. It is situated one floor up from the gates and one can access it through the stairs or the elevator on the other side. The room is pleasant with good views of the runway with its own rest rooms and internet terminals. It feels like a big open room with very few divided sections except for the computers in the back and the small eating area in between the two curving pantries. There is no hot food and only snacks - potato chips, cookies, olives, and small pastries. Juices are in pitchers and other beverages are located in the refrigerators. There was also two types of wines on the counters (a red and white I believe).

After checking my emails and raiding the pantry (I was bored to death, what can you do on a 4 hrs layover? ), I headed out to the gate about 40 minutes before dept. There were 2 agents at the counter and boarding started from rows 15-30. Gold and J psgrs were invited to board at their convenience - that usually means either be the first on line or wait until the herd has boarded and do it towards the end.

The purser was positioned at the door greeting psgrs and another one was in row 3 (last row of J). The seats are blue cloth and provided a relaxing ambience. However, the pitch was really tight (30-31" is my guess) and the only good seats are the bulkheads in row 1. A pillow and blanket was in every seat and in J the middle seat is blocked. The FA's were truly professional and well groomed (as expected of foreign carriers). The one in row 3 was stunning and looked like Megan Fox. I had a bulky carry-on and did not seem to quite fit in the overhead and she took it and placed it in row 3 because it was empty. She then proceeded to secure it by wrapping the seat belt around the handle and told me with a smile to not worry about it.

Cold packaged towels were passed while we were sitting at the gate and pre-dept. drinks in glasses were offered. At first there was water, OJ and sparkling wine on the trays but psgs could order anything they wanted. Afterwards magazines and newspapers in Spanish, English and German were distributed. The only minor flaw is the lack of proactive coat hanging. Otherwise the crew was outstanding with a great attitude and professional demeanor.

After take off the purser took the drink orders and served two packages of peanuts w/dried fruits to each psgr. There was a hot meal but no choice. It was a steak entree with potatoes, a side salad with two chunks of cheese and a custard dessert. The steak was a bit bland but the quantity was very adequate. Furthermore, the FA passed around with the bread basket about 3 times. Glasses were refilled and refreshed everytime which was very nice.

Arrival into FRA was on time on a rainy evening. We had to use the stair and bussed into the terminal which was a bit inconvenient. I then made my way to the Savoy hotel on S-banh and relaxed in the pool for a couple of hours before going to bed.

to be continued with LH F Terminal and FRA-TLV flight....

The LH Experience

After some much needed relaxation in the pool the night before, I woke up somewhat refreshed at 0500A and decided to get an early start and have breakfast at the LH F Terminal.

The Savoy is almost next to the Meridien and conveniently located within a few meters of the Haupbtbahnof. I made my way to the station to catch the S8 train and within a few minutes I arrived at the airport. I headed towards the LH F counter where a smiling agent greeted me and issued my boarding pass. I asked if one could walk to the F Terminal and she pointed me in the direction of the bldg instructing me to walk outside towards it for a couple of minutes.

The LH F Terminal

It took me less than 10 minutes to get there and when I finally arrived I took a good look at the imposing building from below. It sure looked impressive and I couldn't wait to get inside its exclusive confines. It sure resembled a heavenly mirage amidst the busy and chaotic turmoil of its surroundings.

I rang the bell and a voice instructed me to wait for my assistant to escort me inside. In about 2 minutes Kate arrived and welcomed me. She was professionally groomed and had the look of a model. So far the first impression has been great. Then I was escorted through security where the process was performed efficiently and in a very dignified way, unlike the mass herding that one is accustomed to at most US airports. Kate asked for my passport and then showed me where to drop my bags. She wished me a good stay and said that she will be back to check on me later on.

Right after security there is a small duty free shop to the left followed by the entrance to the lounge. Upon entering the bar and dining area are to the right and the office cubicles to the left. Overall it is quite a spacious setting and I proceeded to have some breakfast from the nicely stocked buffet. There is a chef on premise making sure that items were restocked frequently and available for any "special orders". There is also a Cigar Room for smokers as well as relaxation rooms and showers.

Kate eventually came back and escorted me once again through security. I guess this is a formality for all TLV bound psgrs. Afterwards I was directed to passport control and then was introduced to the driver that took me in a Mercedes sedan directly to the plane.

The ride from the terminal to the gate was a rare treat that I enjoyed. One seldom has the opportunity to get so close to the aircrafts and have a first look at ramp activities. Once we reached the gate where I saw the 744 majestically parked, my driver escorted me through the stairs in the back of the jetbridge and carried my bag all the way to the upper deck by my seat. He then introduced me to the two flight attendants working the F cabin who immediatedly welcomed me and helped me settle down.

Today's flight was going to be a very special one as it turned out that I was the only passenger in F. How often does one get this luxury to have an entire cabin to oneself? Although I am no stranger to traveling in F on intercontinental flights, I must admit that I don't indulge in it as often as I would like and the very few times that I am fortunate enough to enjoy it, I cherish the experience dearly. And no matter how often I fly in Business class, there is just no comparison.

So I settle into my seat and the FA brings me some macadamia nuts and a drink. A minute later the captain passes by and welcomes me onboard. While still on the ground, I receive my amenity kit, pajama and menu set. I peruse the choices for lunch and everything looks enticing. I am ready to partake in this Lucullian feast.

Having some time to spare before departure, I take out my camera and decide to take pictures of the cabin to document today's journey. Below are some samples:

Once we took off and leveled at 35,000 feet, the FA started the service and set up the carts even though there was only one passenger. I was offered a red rose - a hallmark of LH F's service since the 50's (maybe late 40's or early 50's) followed by an amuse bouche consisting of pear on top of phyllo pastry with blue cheese. Since caviar was featured as an appetizer, I couldn't refuse such an offer and I had it along with the Smoked Tuna and the Beetroot with Comte cheese. For the main course I opted for the seasonal Goose which proved to be outstanding. The meat was cooked to perfect tenderness and the sides were delicious. After the main course, I chose some Crotin and Coutances cheese with grapes and finished with the Delicacy of Chocolate along with a glass of Tokay. To conclude the meal service in style, the FA rolled out the cart with liquors and a box of chocolates with unusual flavors such as cactus pear, green tea or mango among others. The service provided was flawless in every aspect and the dishes were nicely presented and prepared.

At one point during the meal service, the FA who was serving me apologized that she had to go to the Business class section to help out but assured me that her colleague will look after me. When she returned she made sure that I was taken care of and I appreciated her professional demeanor throughout the whole trip. Once we landed in TLV my carry on was waiting for me by the stairs and one of the FA's escorted me downstairs. Upon seeing me descend, the FA's in the lower deck stopped the psgrs from exiting in order to allow me through the door first. Now that is service! ^

What an incredible treat to be the only passenger in F, and given the full royal treatment. I noticed all the wine bottles were open and ready for your consumption pleasure, regardless of whether you wanted them or not.

We were two of three in F on a flight in July and the service was also extraordinary. But the FCT is another world. We came in from the train and kept being pushed to the FCL, but we persevered and made it to the FCT. Wow. That's all I can say. Wow. Talk about being treated like a VIP.

I have to say that Spanair looks pretty nice.

Impressions of Israel

I can't help but get excited whenever I visit a new place or fly a new airline. It's kind of a rush for me because it marks a new milestone in my travels and I always look at new experiences as enriching, whether for better or worse.

Long time ago, I decided to be a traveler instead of a tourist. Part of that entails doing my part to understand the culture and customs of the places that I visit. I think it is arrogant to expect others to accommodate to us, especially when we are the guests. So with a fresh set of eyes and some slight trepidation, I venture to Israel. Why trepidation? Because two weeks before the start of the trip there was some friction developing at the Temple Mount and some violence has been reported on the news (TV5 and Reuters).

Israel - the name itself conjures up images of the ancient and sacred. Jerusalem in particular is considered the holiest city on earth by three of the world's major religions. With less than a week to visit this fascinating land I decided to concentrate in Jerusalem and spare one day in Tel Aviv. Besides, this will give me the excuse to plan for a return visit and try a new carrier.

Upon landing into TLV I was afforded a nice view of the beach and some skyscrapers in the downtown area surrounded by trees. The arrival process was pretty painless and on my way to Immigrations I noticed a big rotunda where people sat and ate. The weather was in the low 70's and I took a sherut (minivan taxi) to Jerusalem. The ride cost about 52 shekels (around 13USD and something) for a 45 minutes trip. The exchange rate was approximately 3.75 ILS to 1 USD. Leaving the airport I saw some orange groves in its vicinity and that was the only thing that I remember because I took a short nap during the ride.

Jerusalem

I stayed at the Hotel Palatin in downtown Jerusalem. The property is situated in a pedestrian zone and the sherut dropped me off a couple of meters away from it. It is a basic 2 stars in a very convenient location and I paid about $58 USD/night through Expedia. The rate included breakfast so it was a decent value. I also checked the reviews for this property at Trip Advisor and they all seemed positive. I rang up the bell and took the stairs to the reception area where a nice lady checked me in. There are no elevators at this property so it was a good thing that I traveled light. I entered my room and was taken by its spartan surroundings - certainly a big departure from the Intercontinentals that I am used to staying. Part of the reason why I stayed in a 2 stars is because I knew that I was going to be laid off after I came back from vacation so I decided to save some money. Despite its simplicity the room was clean, the bed was comfy and I had a great view towards Agrippas St.

The first couple of days I concentrated on exploring the Old City - a city within the city enclosed by a 40 foot high wall. It is an amazing place divided into five sections - the Armenian, Christian, Jewish and Muslim Quarters and the Temple Mount. It could be accessed through several gates but the main ones are Jaffa and Damascus. A free tour meets every morning at the Jaffa Gate and it provides a great introduction to the Old City. The rest of the time I explored on my own immersing myself in its atmosphere and sometimes getting lost in its twisting labyrinths. I found the Arab and Jewish Quarters the most compelling because they were actual living quarters where people shopped and carried their everyday activities.

Another area where I found myself pulled into was the Mahane Yehuda Market between Jaffa Road and Agrippas St., within a very close walk to the hotel. The variety of fresh produce, breads and pastries, fish and other goods was incredible. Public markets gives me an insight into the culinary habits of locals and this place did not disappoint. It was exciting to experience the hustle and buzzle of this place, especially on Friday morning before the Sabbath when shoppers busily get their ingredients to prepare for Friday dinner. Despite its appeal, this place has a dark side. Back in 1997 and 2002 there were two terrorist attacks that resulted in several deaths and many injured due to suicide bombings. Was I concerned going there? Sure I was, especially when I saw guards with guns as a reminder of these previous incidents. Did it deter me from going there? Certainly not. I have always believed that if one succumbs to fear, then the others have won. When I was young I survived an earthquake, civil war and hurricane so I guess I have developed a "thicker" skin and not too many things bother me anymore.

On my last day my good friend Pnina - a talented artist and photographer who has supported me immensely with my photography - showed me around Tel Aviv and Yafo. I had a chance to visit the Suzanne Dellal Center, walk along the beach boardwalk and take a glimpse of Yafo. Tel Aviv in a way reminded me of Miami in its beach culture. While Jerusalem is traditional and hold on to its history, Tel Aviv is modern and forward looking. I guess I will have more time to explore this different aspect of Israel on a subsequent visit.

Flying back to MAD on LH

My friend dropped me off at the airport at about 2 1/2 hrs before departure and I knew that going through security in Israel was going to be more "involved" than in other places so I was mentally prepared for the lenghty process.

I had a slight problem finding the LH counter because it was not at departure level where most of the carriers were but tucked in a corner at the arrivals hall. Signs pointing to it were few and not clearly marked. I dutifully stood in line waiting for the agents to pre-screen me before I could reach the counter to check in. It took a good 10 minutes and agents were moving back and forth between the LH line and OS one. Some psgrs in line were getting impatient already.

The questioning was the standard "how long have you been, what was the purpose of your trip, did anyone give you anything to carry, etc". Afterwards my bags were screened and then opened up for physical check. When I finally approached the counter the agent issued me a boarding pass and invitation to the Dan lounge. The process was quick but robotic and marked with indifference. It was far from the joyful experience I received at Frankfurt where agents smiled and provided direct eye contact. Most of the agents at the counter appeared disengaged somehow and I wonder if they are true LH employees or contracted ones. I then headed to the gates and another round of screening followed. I had to remove my shoes, belt, watch and anything in my possession and place them on a tray. Furthermore, I also had to remove the batteries, coins and electronic equipments inside my carry-on backpack and placed them on another tray as well - that was a first one for me. The agent directing the passengers was competent and professional but it was a pain to go back and take things out. Once at the other end I repacked my stuff when I realized to my horror that the lens cap of my Canon DSLR was missing. I went back and asked the agent if they have found one by chance and after checking with her colleagues the answer was negative. It must have dropped in between the ongoing opening and closing of bags.

After that ordeal I finally headed towards the Dan lounge looking forward to "chill out". The agent took my invitation and escorted me to a separate small room with a well stocked bar and snacks. There were a couple of publications available and a TV playing soccer. Large windows afforded a limited view of the tarmac in this intimate setting. The room is ideal for 1-5 people but anything over that it would have felt crowded.

Dan Lounge F section

The agent checked back with me to make sure everything was OK which was a nice touch. I then decided to leave the room and venture into the rest of the lounge where it was crowded and resembled a long hall with seating areas and tables. At the end there was a pantry with cookies, pastries, and drinks. I stopped by the two internet terminals on the side of the hall and checked my emails.

LH 687 TLV - FRA
F/C Seat 83 A
744 Dept. 1635 - Arriv. 1450

I then proceeded to the gate where there was a sizable crowd of people waiting. However, today's flight was not full and once again I witnessed the indifference from the agents at the gate as they were more interested in chatting among themselves than answer passengers' questions. We finally boarded about 25 min. before departure and as expected it was chaotic with everybody congregating at the gate. At least the agent made the announcement to welcome F psgrs to board first.

I climbed upstars and today's flight had 3 psgrs including myself in the upper deck. Two FA's were assigned and performed their duties efficiently by hanging coats and helping psgrs. settle down. I was offered an amenity kit, pajama and slippers but declined the plate of macadamia nuts as I was feeling a bit full so I settled for a glass of water as pre-dept. drink. As was the case on my previous flight, the purser introduced herself and handed me the menu this time with my name and seat number written on it.

The door closed and we started taxiing to the runway. I caught a glimpse of a LY 777 and DL one parked next to us and thought about flying with LY next time I return to Israel. The sun was setting down and it afforded a beautiful view during our ascend. The male FA sat in front of me during take off occupying a jumpseat in front of 83AC and made some small talk.

Once we leveled off the dinner sevice started with the offering of an interesting goat cheese and beet amuse bouche.

The last section of it behind the galley was completely empty and I tried the seats which I found comfy but a bit narrow. In addition if one occupies a window seat I think it would be a bit challenging to exit if your neighbor is in the sleep position.

Overall the service on this flight was good as expected but it was not as stellar as the outbound with the more engaging crew. My experiences flying in international F are limited and LH is my third airline in this cabin. My previous ones were Swiss and United. Needless to say, UA is not in this league and meals do not compare favorably with either LH OR LX. If I had to choose between LH or LX, I am inclined to go with LX. Perhaps it is the layout of the seats affoding more privacy, or the ability of the crew to truly pamper its guests with greater latitude, but LX seems to have the upper hand when it comes to F product in my opinion.

Arrival into FRA was on time and a cart was waiting at the gate to take psgrs to Immigrations. My flight was leaving from the A gates and the driver told me to jump on it. With some time left I purchased the missing cap for my lens and was on my way to my connecting flight. I took a look at the lounges and both the F and J ones were crowded to capacity. I did not stay for long and walked to my gate.

The flight was not full in J and I moved to an empty row after take off. The purser did an efficient and professional job onboard and there was a choice of lamb or salmon for dinner. In addition there was a booklet menu on each tray. It appears that LH provides menus and hot meals for flights that are longer than 2.5 hrs and MAD just barely makes it.

Once I arrived in MAD I took the metro to my hotel located at the Puerta del Sol. MAD metro system is easy to navigate, clean and safe. I stayed two days to decompress before taking my flight back to SFO on AA. The next morning I walked to the Plaza Mayor and shopped at the Rastro. There was a good police presence there I guess due to the constant warnings of pickpocketers. The rest of the day I did some Christmas shopping at the Corte Ingles and hanged around Chueca. Madrid is always lively and there was no shortage of people walking the streets at the wee hours of the morning. This second visit proved to be much more enjoyable than my first time there about 10 years ago where I was almost robbed in plain view of everybody walking down the Grand Via. I was with a friend and all of a sudden this man in front turns around and grabs my legs. I kicked him and kept walking quickly. It really took me by surprise and this has never happened to me before in all my travels (and I travel quite frequently I must add).

On my day of departure I had the chance to visit IB's Sala Velasquez as a PLT member. The lounge is located inside security close to the main shops and it was very spacious with great views of the tarmac and decent selection of drinks and food. There was a buffet breakfast in the morning featuring a variety of meats and sides as well as morning pastries and Movenpick ice creams. There is also a separate room with internet terminals, showers and relaxation rooms.

Thanks for reading and especially commenting on this report. It was a great trip and use of UA miles and I can't say enough about the LH F Terminal experience. It is just fantastic!
