OP here - thanks again to everyone who offered advice! By way of update, today SAS released an additional business award spot on our preferred flight and we were able to switch to the same flight on our preferred travel date--a happy ending! It appears that the information offered in this thread, and in other places I saw in my research, to the effect that SAS does not ever release close-in award space is outdated or incorrect. There is hope!
