I already have an account unfortunately, but I just wanted to share something really awesome we've been able to do here in NYC, for anyone visiting or just signing up.
I call it the Uber/Lyft tag. I live in Brooklyn just next to Prospect Park. I visit at my friend's frequently, north of Columbia, 160th or so Streets. It's not difficult getting home but at 3AM the station gets a bit sketchy and not particularly pleasant after getting some wine in you, but...
since you get that $20-$25 from Uber and $20-$25 from Lyft for each referral, and there's a massive $5 zone from 97th St down for Lyft and much of Brooklyn on this side of Flatbush Ave, I'd just use an Uber, ride it down to 96th St and whatever, call an Lyft and ride it to essentially where you get on the Manhattan (or Brooklyn, if you prefer), and get on a different Uber/Lyft with your remaining credits.
If you time it right, you can even skip the $5 shenanigans all together and find a midpoint for a Uber/Lyft switch in the East Village on Bowery. I've pieced together a uber coupon and a Lyft coupon and spent 53 cents on what was going to be a $51 ride.
If you have a passenger, haev them sign up in the car with your code and have them pay for the second leg to activate that, venmo them if you have to. Especially late at night, the C platforms uptown are cold and lonely and weird places, but if you're enterprising you can definitely get across town for almost no money with all the coupons and free deals they throw you. I personally like to use Lyft from the start if you're not doing the $5 deal because it takes them a few extra bit to match and I find that their cars take a bit longer to arrive.
