Johannesburg getting 777 aircraft insread of 787?

Noticing that the 787 seems to be replaced by older 777 on my flights mid year onwards which is a shame. Anyone know if this is a temporary change or likely to be the normal choice for the foreseeable future?

From what I could see the JNB route is doing well (on my flight in March we had economy passengers sitting in crew seats by the toilets in J).

The 777 brings quite a few more seats, especially in Y and loads more cargo capacity.

They will be airline people on staff travel and they might even hold business class tickets.

On the plus side (especially if you are travelling in Business), I believe the 777s will be the first to see the new "Super J" seat when the refurbishment process begins. And, surely, the 3-4-3 configuation in economy can't be worse than economy in the 787?

3-4-3 on the 77W is a bit wider than the 3-3-3 on the 787, also 1-2" more legroom (depending on row), no IFE box. Like you said the 777 will see the new J first.

Maybe they will have the new J seat then. I have really enjoyed the 787 in J for my regular JNB trips. I much prefer it over the 330 or 777 J seats... Mainly due to the single seat config and storage space.

Interesting. One of the passengers was an elderly man and he was eating an economy snack when I saw him then wrapped up in an economy blanket as it's quite cold by that door.

Certainly looked like a horrible way to spend 8-9 hours facing a toilet.

Staff include Captains of both QR passenger, and freight, aircraft. The latter may be slightly older (and experienced) than the sprighly bodies you associate with passenger Captains.

Staff travel is available to fathers and passengers holding tickets valid for travel in economy class can be seated in jump seats at business class galley points.

I agree. I will not take staff travel for leisure and for duty travel I will, depending on the direction of travel, either postpone the meeting or anything I need to do back at base if a jump seat is the only option.

It's currently 2×788 daily. AFAICT, sometime during June and continuing thereafter, it transitions to 1×788 and 1×77W daily.

Specifically, it's the overnight flight DOH-JNB that's changing to the 777-300ER and the daytime flight that's staying 787-8.

In the reverse direction, it's the opposite: It's the daytime flight JNB-DOH that's changing to the 777-300ER and the nighttime flight that's staying 787-8.

I'm doing LAX-DOH-JNB next February, but they didn't have award availability on the DOH-JNB overnight on my date, only the daytime, so (if the planes actually remain on the same schedule through February) I'm going to experience the 787 on the same route. And it so happens I'm returning on the 787 overnight flight JNB-DOH connecting to the (daytime) DOH-LAX flight on my way back; are you not getting the 787 (on JNB-DOH) in that direction either?

Last edited by sdsearch; May 4, 2016 at 3:34 pm Reason: clarified that 787 is on JNB-DOH, not DOH-LAX

Changes to flight times

I was booked to fly on QR 833 from Bangkok to Doha last Saturday.

The booking showed the departure at 20.40 but on arrival at the airport I found the time had been changed to 21.15. This was not a problem BUT I received no notification of a change to the time which had it been earlier could have been a problem.

Is it Qatar policy not to inform passengers of a change or was it simply a breakdown in communications.
