I know it's Qantas, but.....

Hi all, obviously I got plenty of time on hand. We all know most non Australians spell the airline with an "u" like Quantas. So, I know that's a non Australian habit since ( I think ) we have no word that does not have an "U" attached to the Q. My question is how many Australians have "problems" with
the airline's name. Sure, this will be unscientific but I would love to know being a victim of wrong spelling for decades. Obviously please take this post with tongue in cheek, please.

It's more the people who seem to forget that QANTAS is an Acronym so the lack of a U shouldn't be an issue.

QANTAS used to be an initialism and has remained as the name as the airline

There are plenty of words in English that start with "Q" and are not followed by "U" such as qat, qats, qawwal , qawwali, qi , qiblah etc

Have a look here http://www.qantas.com/travel/airlines/history/global/en

A few determined individuals overcame formidable obstacles to establish the Queensland and Northern Territory Aerial Services Ltd (QANTAS). Supported by committed staff and loyal customers, the airline persevered through war and peace to serve the nation and build an enterprise.

Not a lot different to that forgotten airline Pan Am

To Australians it is ubiquitous, you see it everywhere, all the time.

I think most Australians with occasion to type it wouldn't have to think twice about how to spell it.

I think most of us Australians would find this question amusing. And no, it's iconic

Qatar doesn't use a pronunciation that would suggest the existence of the letter "U"

Indeed - my typing there was bad - I meant to write "qiblah" and added the "u" by accident - given the situation of tryng to show words without the "u", was rather silly

There are plenty of other words too with a "q" and no "u" though , including the obvious one letter noun --- q
