QF flight detour

Hi,

Any ideas why QF171 MEL-WLG would make such a detour today - adding an hour to the normal flight time?

thanks

Looks like it was planned that way ( via LHI ) maybe it was flow with an aircraft with some sort of navigational deficiency. Did the same aircraft come back the same way? Today's aircraft if flying the normal route.

It was delayed quite a bit, probably a maintenance or tech issue that meant they had to stay closer to land. Or perhaps avoid bad weather.

No weather issues in NZ yesterday.

Looks like an ETOPS related issue, with flight path close to LDH.

Also via LHI, which strengthens the theory that some component of the RNav wasn't working and they navigated via LHI instead of canceling the flight. Probably all fixed now.

LDH is the IATA code for Lord Howe Island. Apologies for not being clearer.

I was just referring to the flight plan that some one up thread helpfully linked. Airlines don't plan using IATA codes.

The strip at LDH is 1000 m long and has no lights. Surely they wouldn't consider this as an alternate? Unless of course it was to provide a handy base for SAR in case if a ditching in the lagoon?

they didn't plan to land at LDH, it appears that they planned via LHI ( the NDB or VOR) for navigational guidance in the absence of RNAV.

That makes sense. I was also thinking of possible military exercises. I have previously been on a LDH-SYD run that went way north of the planned route due to airspace closures due military.
