Ua: Sfo - hkg (p) / hkg - tpe - sfo (y) for $2K

Curious filing from UA. I'll put this out there in the event someone smarter than me can figure things out.

SFO - HKG can be had in C as a P fare for ~ $800 (including the Polaris non-stop). It cannot be had on a one-way basis, only part of a round trip.

June 4

But I can't get the return to price similarly even though there's plenty of P fares available:

June 14:

A one-hop in via TPE in C (J/P) will price out at $2164 ($3K total RT)

Or, you could take the "Economy" option and do a hybrid C/Y routing for $2K. It's not expanded in picture below, but even if you pick the Economy option TPE - HKG segment is in J.

I think I was able to reproduce despite the lack of pictures.

It's a P-fare filed to TPE, not HKG, but it has a stopover in HKG. Here is the example with the return in economy:

I had posted the sfo-hkg P find on the UA forum last week but also couldn't find a return leg. Returning in Y via TPE is a smart (and relatively cheap upgrade) strategy!

Yes, UA site has a known "feature" where you can search A-B roundtrip and it will find you an A-B-C-A routing which is fared A/C with a stopover in B. It will then show a "segment price" A-B equal to half the A/C fare, and a return B-C-A trip with a "segment price" of 150% of the fare.

Yeah, you did. Generally, plenty of R space available on any given day for the TPE - SFO segment, FWIW.

Is this fare ex-SFO or different from the ex-YVR fare that prices about the same?

What is the expiry date on this fare?

sorry, what do you mean upfare to W? isn't W a discount economy fare?

Yes, it is, but you've booked K -- a deep discount economy fare -- on the return trip. I imagine aphoward13 wants to use a GPU, which requires a W fare at minimum.

W fare bucket allows you to upgrade with GPU where K does not.

Thanks for the explanation! Very curious "feature."

I've seen similar pricing on SFO-HKG-NRT-SFO and SFO-TPE-HKG-SFO as well. J for less than $3k.
