Done a lot of rtw's, but always anchored by the first flight which was date certain. In my cursory reading of the TOC's, I cannot tell if the first flight date is moveable? If so, is 12 months from the purchase of the ticket, the ticketed first flight, or the actual first flight if it is changeable? As many rtw's as I have taken, always welcome input from those who make me look like a rookie.
Not looking for a lower price than this, so willing to book without knowing actual dates as I know that I will need at least one.

In my experience it is possible to have flights more than one year after the ticket issue (and changes to the ticket). I believe in theory you could have your first flight 1 year minus 1 day after issue and the last fligh 1 year minus 1 day after the first flight, which is then two years minus two days.
Great way to lock in cheap prices for an RTW when the currency tanks, but you cannot change the first flight.

A sample NRT-LAX-FRA-JNB-HKG-SIN-NRT costs 676900 Yen plus 785303 for fees = 785303 JPY which converts to around 6300 USD. At around 28000 miles it is around 22 cpm. Not a great fare, but considering the flexibility (can change dates and routing for a small fee after the first flight, can have up to 16 sectors) it is a good deal when you need to visit places in several continents and need flexibility. I often have more than one of these tickets open. JNB, ICN and NRT traditionally had very good prices for these tickets, currently to my knowledge Japan is the best starting points. Transiting in Japan for Asia-US trips does not add to much inconvenience between these tickets.

Not as good as the OW product from JNB on a per mile basis, but potentially more useful since NRT is 'in the path' when you do multiple of these tickets. JNB requires extra positioning.
The OW product charges by the number of continents you touch. One flight to the next continent, then a limit of (normally 4, 6 in North America) flights inside the continent. Some restrictions on the sequence of continents, some for flights inside the continents (like transcons in the US), max 16 sectors. There is a thread in the OW forum about how to maximize mileage. If I remember correctly you can squeeze around 55000 miles out of one of these tickets.
The Star product is mileage based (3 levels 29000/34000/39000 miles max. You can only have 1 flight between each of NA/SA - Europe/Africa - Asia/Australia, can go up and down in these regions, backtrack etc. Only one stop (but multiple connections) per city. Some surcharges for specific flights (like SQ380, they are insane).
If you are looking for the lowest cpm then the Star product with specific routings is better. Assuming you have certain specific places (outside Australia and South America, Star is weak there) then the Star product works better in my experience.
