Do these points count for activity that prolongs account life? I'm a bit confused as Award Wallet doesn't think so. Is there any way to check the account expiration date using La Quinta site?

Did you checked the programs terms and condition? It clearly says that points remain active by earning or redeeming at least once in a 18 month period. Seems clear to me. I do have the same problem you mention with awardwallett, just recently my expiration date changed to 7/30/15
