recommendation
They are not bricks & mortar & I recommend them. Here is why.........
APEX (& the others) have an affiliation agreement with Hertz, etc. They rent older cars while Hertz et. al rent new ones.
We had a minor wear & tear with ours out of DUD. We called Hertz and they called us right back with a replacement i.e. you get the same service.
The "deal" is so good because older cars are imported duty free from Japan.
One more tip. If you follow this board, you will read about one-way rentals from CHC to AKL for example. They are also good. Its because the demand is heavy for one way rentals! Some even pay for the ferry!

We have just rented with ezi car http://www.ezicarrental.co.nz/ for Nov when we are there. Price seemed good and they guarantee the make and model, we ave gone for a 1 year old corolla was pretty good price wise in comparison with the rest.
Reviews are okay on the net, mostly complaining about crap older cars (although they had booked that).
Also if anyone is going to use go rentals they offer a 10% discount link from their FB page.

I've tentatively (no payment done) booked rentals from CHC-ZQN (1-way) and WLG-AKL (1-way) on Hertz as intermediate cars. At the end of the year, both being 1-way rentals, and with all charges it comes out to NZD 510. Just looking at some of the links above, it seems like that is a pretty comparable rate to most, and the cheapest I see on Apex is a car that would be 10+ years old that is ~NZD 150 cheaper. I'd rather pay the extra to have newer technology in the car...

Pretty much. And NZ rental car policies also explicitly remove coverage for half a dozen or so roads in NZ (eg. Skipper's Canyon is a common exclusion) because people drive off them with such regularity. Travel insurance that includes rental car coverage is the way around both problems. Adds about $25 to my annual global policy to have rental car coverage included.
