I'm not too familiar with this, but AFAIK Åre is the best place in Sweden for skiing (downhill).

I'm quite sure Östersund is the closest airport, at least that's where Finnair fly in the winter:

For Åre Flying to Trondheim is a Viable Alternative
Actually, Trondheim, Norway (TRD) might be a more convenient gateway to Åre, with direct connections on WF/SK to CPH and on KL to AMS, as well as the predictable domestics to OSL (about every hour).
Åre is about 90 minutes west of Östersund, on the main road between Östersund and Trondheim. The distance from Trondheim Airport Værnes (TRD) to Åre is two hours by train. There is a twice-daily direct train from TRD to Åre; Nabotåget . This train does not serve the railway station at the airport proper, but the junction station of Hell (yes, really!) one kilometer south of the airport terminal. Until Jan 7 the train leaves Hell at 08.59 and 17.15, returning at 09.22 and 17.34. Journey time is between 120 and 124 minutes.

It's still the northernmost ski resort in Sweden, and I am considering a trip there in May for some midnight sun skiing. I've done Salen and Are since I started this thread -- and the latter is my preference by far and away for Swedish skiing -- but I figured I should get in some Arctic skiing at least once in my life.
