Local commute options in Stockholm and Oslo

We will be visiting Stockholm and Oslo later this month and wanted to know what is the most economical way to go from airport to hotel and do sightseeing within the city for a family of 4? Does Uber come out cost competitive compared to other public transport for 4 people?

For Oslo; getting to downtown Oslo a taxi (or UberPop) is around 650kr on day time for four persons, more outside normal hours. Children under 16 travelling with adults travel for free on the airport express train so that would only cost 2x180kr=360kr. Local trains would be 2x90+2x45=270kr and then local public transport in Oslo is included. There are busses aswell, but they are not cheaper than the local trains and only makes sense if you're destination is not in downtown Oslo.

Thanks. Is the 90Kr / 45Kr option for a single one way journey or a daily pass valid for unlimited journeys in 1 day?

No, the 24 hour ticket would cost 2x 190 + 2x 95 = 570kr.

For Stockholm:

The express train from Arlanda Airport (Arlanda Express) is running a promo during the summer where four tickets cost 500 SEK. This is equivalent to what a normal taxi would cost (Taxi Stockholm and UberX has a flat rate of 520 SEK from the airport to anywhere within central Stockholm).

I would stick to Uber while in Stockholm. Taxi Stockholm is also great, but you must make sure that the their phone number is printed on the car (08-15 00 00) or you might get a more expensive "copy" (like "Stockholms Taxi" with very similar logotype). They're sneaky!

As for local transport, use Uber or the local busses and metro.

For Stockholm you have a couple of options to get from the airport to town.

I assume you're flying in to Arlanda, not Bromma airport?

From Arlanda you have:
1) Arlanda Express Highspeed train
Flexible r/t Ticket for two adults (kids are for free) is SEK 1060 (SEK 560 for one way) and leaves you straned at the central station in Stockholm. Fixed ticket for a specific train combination would be SEK 600 (SEK 300 for one way) if you book in advance. Book here: https://www.arlandaexpress.se/default

2) SJ, public commuter train
With SL, SEK 300 for two adults plus two children one way, stops on some more stops along the way, so perhaps better than Arlanda Express if you find a stop close to your hotel. Book at https://www.sj.se

3) Flybus Service
SEK 258 for 2 adults and 2 children, I think it also stops somewhere on the route a couple of time but I'm not sure. I never take the bus. Anyway, can also be booked on sj.se.

4) Taxi
Should be around SEK500 from Arlanda to downtown Stockholm. Make sure to book in advance or agree on a fixed price. Always use Taxikurir, Taxi Stockholm or Taxi 20:
http://www.taxikurir.se/
http://www.taxistockholm.se/
http://www.taxi020.se/
They have a convenient smartphone app which allows to book a cab and pay online at a fixed price. Very easy and you are safe not to get ripped off (which is a real problem in bigger Swedish cities if you use the wrong cab...)

So in short, for a family of four I would probably opt for a taxi as the costs difference is not that huge and it will drop you off where you need to go.

In Stockholm I would go for the metro, buses or for very special locations for cab (again use the smart phone app to get a fixed price before you start). For the local trains and busses see http://sl.se/.
