Do you need a Metrocard for the AirTrain?

Hello All,

do you have to buy a MetroCard in order to ride the Airtrain between JFK and Jamaica, or can you just touch in with a contactless credit card, like on the NYC subway?

Thanks!

A Metrocard is still required to pass through the AirTrain faregates at the Jamaica and Howard Beach terminals. Contactless payment is expected to be in place sometime in 2024.

The answer is yes, for now. The other thing I'd mention is if you can have the amount pre-loaded ahead of time - you'll save yourself about 5 - 10 minutes of waiting that I've seen outside of the turnstile.
