where can I get decent Mexican food in Manhattan?
Particularly the UWS?
I've tried Cilantro and Gabriela's.. eh. Not great.
There are some burrito joints that are ok, like Great Burrito, but what about sit-down full-service Mexican restaurants? Any ideas?

Love the seafood, will have to check it out.
I daresay that Mexican seems to be a deficiency of the UWS. Or perhaps I am comparing it to my neighborhood in D.C. (Adams Morgan) where I could pick up good mexican on every corner.

With the exception of Rosa Mexacano and Maya, you can't get good Mexican food in New York. Both are upscale, and will remind you of this when you look at their menus. None of the so-called basic stuff (thank goodness).

Maya
I agree with Maya. It is fabulous. Not as big a fan of Rosa Mexicana but some people really like it. Both are on the pricey side. A reasonably priced casual place that is okay is MaryAnn's.

I've been to all of the excellent suggestions above - Pampano, Maya (many times), and Rosa Mexicano. Pampano and Maya are both Richard Sandoval restaurants, although Pampano has more of a seafood focus. I think Rosa Mexicano is a tad cheaper, and there is a location at W62nd & Columbus.
Favorites at Maya: lobster and shrimp (langosta y camarones) & filet mignon tacos (tacos de puntas de filete). Be sure to get the guac and chips, too. ^

So far I have been very impressed with the quality of your average restaurant in the UWS.
Mexican has been hit or miss. BBQ is another. That Texas Roadhouse place on Broadway and the Jimmy's place were not all that impressive.
Indian has been quite good. There is a vegetarian indian joint up on Broadway that I dig quite a bit.
Greek (Kefi) has been quite good.
Lots of French bistros that are decent.
I liked Fred's for comfort food.
Cafe Lola or whatever from You've Got Mail was kind of a disappointment.

If you just want a taco, head down to Hell's Kitchen and hit up Tehuitzingo on 10th Ave between 47th and 48th. It's a little Mexican bodega with a hidden taco stand in the back that makes inexpensive, delicious, authentic tacos.
I also like the Mexican-fusion joint called Hell's Kitchen on 9th Ave. It's not remotely "authentic" and it's a little too loud, but it's darn tasty.

Yeah this is a losing battle. If you're used to the Mexican food of the Southwest US like I am (grew up in Texas and lived in LA and San Diego for 5 years), you won't like anything in NYC, sadly. Rosa Mexicana is good, but it's a chain, as is Dos Caminos. At both, the guacamole is good, so take that and run!!!

Take out your MetroCard and ride the subway down to La Esquina.

Best to have a reservation. Puts Rosa Mexicano, et al to shame.
