US MR from EWR, 20K needed for 1K, any ideas......

I'm in the same position and have decided it's not worth it but if you must...

EWR-SFO $250 your best shot...do that a couple times and buy the rest?

Or just suck it up and go to SIN.

Thanks much for the response, sorry, but what is SIN?

SIN = Singapore Changi Airport

What pduck01 means, I believe, is that rather than do a bunch of short segments, or even transcon's, you do a longhaul across the ocean to get the miles

Not quite sure what your schedule is, but you can do EWR-SIN r/t which will give you 19709 miles on UA metal for $760. For example EWR-NRT-SIN-HKG-EWR (http://goo.gl/flights/TfMU):
Code:
Thu, Dec 3 | 10:30 am – 2:45 pm+1
Newark (EWR) – Tokyo (NRT)
United 79 · Economy Class · Boeing 777
Flight time: 14h 15m

Layover in Tokyo NRT is 3h 40m

6:25 pm+1 – 1:15 am+2
Tokyo (NRT) – Singapore (SIN)
United 803 · Economy Class · Boeing 777
Flight time: 7h 50m

Layover in Singapore SIN is 4h 30m

Sat, Dec 5 | 5:45 am – 9:30 am
Singapore (SIN) – Hong Kong (HKG)
United 896 · Economy Class · Boeing 777
Flight time: 3h 45m

Layover in Hong Kong HKG is 1h 45m

11:15 am – 1:50 pm
Hong Kong (HKG) – Newark (EWR)
United 180 · Economy Class · Boeing 777
Flight time: 15h 35m
EDIT: Not sure what I'm doing, but I'm 2/3 getting the $760 price and 1/3 getting this to price out at $1100. YMMV.

OP -- price out flights to GUM; there are some cheap Guam fares, via SFO & HNL.

And you have verified that with those 20k miles on the cheap you'll still hit the $12,000 PQD target, right?

do yourself a favor and do 13k miles in P or higher. There are some nice routes via AC e.g. EWR-YYZ-IST-ZZZ-Europe r/t. P-class earns pretty well on UA MP and Europe C can be had cheaply if you are willing to take a few days.

If you come to SIN, don't just turn around. Stick around for 24 hours or so. It's well worth it (a bit hot and beer's expensive, but great food and a cool city to explore). Perhaps I'm biassed though...

That is the big issue, I don't see how anyone could just fly 100,000 miles on United metal and spend $12,000 on tickets, given that taxes and airport fees don't count. I will have wildly over 100,000 EQM this year, but some of my flights are on Star Alliance, and so the $$ doesn't count towards PQDs.

Chinatown for cheap(er) beer. Just as hot though.

40% of my flights are on non-UA metal and I can tell you that 100% of them count towards PQD. There is no 'metal' requirement for PQD earning, not sure where you read that, all you need is a 016 ticket but it can be 100% operated by a *A partner.

I don't know that it's a huge deal for mostly UA flyers or anyone who can book *A on 016 ticket stock. I won't get back to 1K this year, but even buying mostly discounted tickets I will reach platinum's EQD requirement only one flight after meeting the EQM requirement. I'd just hate for the OP to take a mileage run buying the cheapest possible ticket and then realize he missed 1K by 500 PQD. The OP has been awfully quiet since asking that question.
