You sound terrified. You're saying they'll "hurt me" like they're some sorta loan sharks (well, they are, but not the Guido and a baseball bat kind). Glad you gave up on 'em, I never even started (thouhg the *Wood card is kinda tempting. What bravado is there here? We've been whining, you've been cowering. [....]

What "forces" am I dealing with here? Nobody's gonna do [....] to me, aside from deny some GC orders. Waaaah.

Any idea why AMEX is cancelling gift cards?

I don't see any downside for AMEX when someone buys $3k worth of gift cards from their website, with their AMEX cc or any other cc.

It's not like doing anything iffy like buying mint coins.

Why do they offer gift cards on their website, if they won't let some people buy just a couple grand worth of them?

Because Amex is paranoid, and always has been pretty quick to shut down anything that smelled funny. Large amounts of GCs + quickly draining them of value smells of money laundering, thus they shut it down.

I'd write to the President of AMEX and politely explain the situation and ask for their help in resolving the situation. I did that years ago on some issue and the response came very quickly. Not sure you'll like the answer but at least I'd bet you'll get one.

Let's get back to the main topic & knock off the personal comments. I don't want to close this thread. Thanks, y'all.

Everyone needs to quit there whining and just move on. If they shut you down, they don’t want your business. What is so hard to understand?

Given what the financial institutions did with all the fraudulent property appraisals and frauds and then their beggaring with their hand in the taxpayer's pockets for a handout, it doesn't matter that they don't want our business. What matters is that we want to give them the business for all they have done! In spades!

What we have going on with the mint and gift card business is a little reality hacking, a little organized card counting in a corrupt casino?

If they wanted to crush the usefulness of using amex GCs they should just end their relationship with BC. They shouldn't punish me for ordering and using their GCs.

AMEX is either the smartest or dumbest CC company out there. Giving their members FRs and blacklisting people can seem smart on the books but PR wise I'm not too sure...

And to do it to people wanting to purchase gift cards?? Ehhh

Obviously AMEX has caught on to the fact that some people aren't purchasing gift cards to give away as gifts. Rather they are purchasing them and then immediately spending them on themselves.

I find nothing wrong with people trying to milk the system. I also find nothing wrong with AMEX declining to do business with people who milk the system. All's fair in love and the collection of award points.

While I do agree with your statement, I do find something wrong with amex's behavior. If you decline to do business with a customer, just tell them so. Don't dance around it, don't lie to them, don't BS everybody with "oh, you just failed our verification process", just say "I'm sorry, due to X reason we can no longer accept your orders". Don't make me spend 2hr on the phone with Chase and Amex GC customer service without giving me an actual answer. Don't promise me a callback 3x and never deliver. Just say "FOAD, we don't want your business".

Honesty, even with customers you don't want, is pretty essential when running a service business. I've reconsidered getting an AmEx card after this whole debacle, as I can't be sure I can ever trust what they're telling me.

I gave mine away as graduation gifts, and AMEX cancelled them after i gave them away.

Was this after you'd bought a few hundred/thousand dollars in gift cards and churned them? If so, then it shouldn't be a complete surprise that AMEX put the hammer down. Not great form on their part to cancel the cards after you purchased them, I 100% agree. But if you were gaming their system, then they have a right to put a stop to it. If you go to Vegas and count cards, I guarantee that they'll eventually escort you out, even if you've lost thousands of dollars at their casino in the past.

I also agree that it would be nice if AMEX would be honest with customers as to why they are putting the hammer down instead of just disallowing purchases with no reason, or worse, cancelling the gift cards post-purchase. But it's pretty obvious that AMEX is sending you a very loud and clear message, even though it is indirect.

C'est la vie.
