AA: Maximum number of segments for 'creative' routing

Trying to maximize a trip from the Bay Area (SMF/SFO/OAK/SJC) to Norfolk VA area (ORF/PHF/RIC). Flight matrix doesn't seem to give more than two layovers. Is that a restriction based on AA, or just something the matrix assumes is a thing that a normal person would want?

I've got a full day to fly and am trying to bump up some mileage for a challenge. Best I've found so far is probably SMF > CLT > LGA > RIC for 3,071 miles but it seems like I should be able to do better. I feel like when I used to do this with Delta, I was able to creatively route right on their site, but AA only wants to give me the best available stuff.

edit: Can't edit the topic it seems, but I'd like to keep this domestic if at all possible.

Is it even worth making all those stops once the revenue spend kicks in for 2017? AA's on time performance is abysmal. Miss one connecting flight and you're screwed.

Between having SMF as a base (which is pretty much AA or Southwest), and the Citi Prestige benefit of 1.6x points when used for AA flights, AA is my go-to carrier. I agree about on-time performance but it seems like everyone's delayed flying into SFO in the mornings anyway so I'm used to it.

I'm doing a challenge so that I retain Platinum through 2017 so the revenue spent won't really bother me, it'll be mostly ThankYou points paying for the travel anyway, I just need the miles for EQMs.

Last fall when I was trying to get segments, I was able to book a 3 connection one way on aa.com ONT-PHX-DFW-CLT-TYS. Looks like the same is available now starting search at Google flights then going to aa.com from Google.
