Highly doubt that's the W fare needed to apply a GPU...

That isn't a Premium Fare since it's an Economy fare that is upgraded to Business with a SWU. For a second I thought UA decided to follow AA with their mistake fare..

Define R>5. These flights certainly aren't $600 in J if booked normally.

You cannot upgrade these fares. W fares for this routing start in the $1300s... decent, but not unheard of.

R>5 means there are more than 5 seats available for upgrade using UA GPUs. In order to use a GPU though, it must be a W fare or higher. OP's HKG fares are most certainly not W fares or higher, and as such are not upgradeable.

The ORD fares look to have been a retaliation for Hainan airlines cheapo prices to PEK and HKG. These have been consistently really low all year now but that seems to be the only place UA is offering doorbuster prices.

+1

I purchased this, though would rather fly the DFW-HKG sector on AA's 77W than on UA's old 772's

Unless I can get on a 747. But they're showing 777's in November.

Are you saying the equipment in the order you'd prefer is:

UA 744
AA 77W
UA 772

?

Why would you ever prefer a UA744 over a UA772? You're talking about a 12-14 hr flight..with (possibly) no AC power, AND no AVOD. That has the makings of a miserable time.

I've never been on the AA 77W, but have heard it's 10 abreast in Y. I'm not "wide" per se, but I don't think I could fit comfortably in a 10 across seating..

To be honest, before the AA mistake, I was looking at DEN-ORD-HKG to avoid the 744..

Most all 747s now have power in the back.

Just did SFO-PVG, and there is streaming entertainment over WiFi and paid Internet.

I did EK in 3-4-3 on 777, though that was just a short HKG-BKK hop, and it was tolerable.

AA has a few rows in front of coach with 3-3-3 seating with extra legroom. Not sure how much extra it is.
