Unfortunately, since these flights are marketed and sold as "through" flights the system only recognizes them as a single segment. (In fact, the taxes are often lower as a result.)
Since this is a legacy CO carryover, many pmCO agents know how to sever the segments, while many pmUA do not. Getting credit for both is nontrivial and sometimes ultimately unsuccessful; my personal experience has taught me to avoid these types of trips or accept that I'll only get the "through" mileage credit.
