UA: LHR-GIG £722 ($1213) V fare with free stopover - back again
Not seen this one mentioned this year.
Although not true MR quality in itself at 6cpm, the free stopover in the US lends itself to using it as a positioning trip for additional side trips without the burden of additional UK APD on top of the 19k+ miles you can do on this trip alone. Plus, as a V fare, it is upgradable for 1k's throughout on routes that are not traditionally too difficult to find upgrades on.
Available 25 Aug until 12 Dec and from 6 Jan 2105 to 31 May on the outbound. Return from last stopover point not before first Sunday after outward.
One free stopover allowed, a second charged at $100. Max 5 transfers (2 in area 2/3 and 3 in area 1 allowed each way).
Last year, I booked this as LHR-MUC-ORD-IAH-GIG on the outward then stayed a few days in Rio. However, a same day turnaround option is available in GIG back to the US any day of the week, eg GIG-IAH-ORD (stopover). I then did a combination of two other mileage runs, which took me to SFO-EWR-SJO-EWR-SFO and back to ORD. In all I covered 35k miles but took my time and did a few overnights in hotels along the way.
This year there is the very cheap option of the UA/ANA ORD-IAH-NRT-CGK and rtn (22374 miles for £503/$855 @ 3.82cpm) with a same day turnaround option in CGK.
So for the really suicidal mileage runner, there is the option of
Thursday LHR-IAH-GIG (9850 miles)
Friday GIG-IAH-ORD (5941 miles)
Saturday ORD-IAH-NRT-CGK (11187 miles)
Monday CGK-NRT-IAH-ORD (11187 miles)
Tuesday ORD-EWR-LHR (4185 miles)
Total 42350 miles for £1226/$2059 @ 4.8 cpm in six days.
(More leisurely options available of course and plenty of dates available).
