Qatar to Open $17 Billion Airport Next Week After 6-Year Delay

6 years late is better than never? And in all likelihood Brandenburg will match that opening delay.

Qatar is planning to open Hamad International Airport (a $17 billion project) next week. On April 30, 10 discount airlines will start using the airport. Nearly a month later, on May 27, the airport's lounges are slated to be finished and larger carriers like Qatar Airways will begin calling the airport home.

The most exciting news so far: Hamad will be able to accommodate the A380.

If you'll be flying through the airport this summer, snap some pictures and write up a quick trip report so we can all live vicariously through you and your travels?

Any information on already ticketed flights to/from DOH getting rerouted to the new airport?

Will be hard to operate a hub from two airports, so guess all the flights will change to the new airport(?).

Hubs do it all the time, except they call them 'new terminals' rather than 'new airports'.
In case of Doha, the two 'airports' are right next to each other.

Currently only the discount carriers have been rerouted to the new terminal. They are supposedly waiting for the lounges to be finished (big lawsuits with the company which was to build and furnish the lounges) in order for the mainstream carriers to move there. The IATA conference in the first week of June will be the Qatar Airways opening for the terminal.

Qatar web site says:

Todays highly anticipated opening of the new airport signifies to the world that Doha is now ready to open its doors for passengers to experience an airport that transforms the travel experience, and it is with much excitement that we await the move of all Qatar Airways flights to this new facility on the 27th May.
