Does Marriott have any existing properties in other similarly currently "war-torn" countries?

No idea. I'm sure you can do search yourself re: Marriott properties worldwide. I was just posting their press release re: their expansion in multiple countries in MEA. Given the press release talked about the next decade in terms of expansion, who knows what the situation will be in some of the countries.

Cheers.

I'm pretty sure they have one in Algiers.

Do we know if these apartments are going to give full points? I stayed at the one in Bahrain (great hotel btw) for like 60 nights but I only got credit for like 15. The policy was that 4 nights were equal to 1 night in a normal hotel.

Marriott International Introduces Three New Brands to Cape Town

Marriott press release:

http://news.marriott.com/2016/10/mar...nds-cape-town/

Excerpt:

Marriott International, Inc. (NASDAQ: MAR), today announced plans for the construction of three new hotel properties in Cape Town

These will be three new hotels in the city: one under the company’s signature brand, Marriott Hotels®, which will be the first Marriott Hotel in Cape Town; the second under the upscale extended stay brand, Residence Inn by Marriott®, the first for South Africa; and the third the upper-moderate tier lifestyle brand, AC Hotels by Marriott®, which is the first hotel under this brand for the Middle East & Africa (MEA) region.

These three planned developments will add over 500 rooms to Cape Town’s hotel accommodation offering. Bringing 189 additional rooms to Cape Town, the AC Hotel Cape Town waterfront will be located at The Yacht Club in the Roggebaai precinct at the gateway to Cape Town’s waterfront, while at Harbour Arch (the current Culemborg node), currently the location of several major construction projects, will be the site of the 200-room Cape Town Marriott Hotel Foreshore and the 150-room Residence Inn by Marriott Cape Town Foreshore.

This announcement is an extension of Marriott’s existing partnership with the Amdec Group, initiated in 2015 with the announcement of the development of the first two Marriott branded hotels in South Africa. These two properties, situated in the popular upmarket Melrose Arch Precinct in Johannesburg, are scheduled to open in 2018, and are the Johannesburg Marriott Hotel Melrose Arch and the Marriott Executive Apartments Johannesburg Melrose Arch.

Marriott International’s growth plans for the continent are impressive: by 2025 the company aims to expand its current presence in Africa to 27 countries, with over 200 hotels and around 37,000 rooms.

I've taken the liberty of looking through some past press material and compiling the below pipeline for Africa:
  • AC by Marriott Cape Town, Waterfront (Cape Town, South Africa) - 188 rooms - 2018
  • Four Points by Sheraton Dar Es Salaam New Africa (Dar Es Salaam, Tanzania) - 174 rooms - 2018
  • Protea Hotel by Marriott Pretoria Loftus Park (Pretoria, South Africa) - 152 rooms - 2018
  • Aloft Port Louis (Port Louis, Mauritius) - 150 rooms - 2019
  • Marriott Executive Apartments Victoria Island (Lagos, Nigeria) - 44 rooms - 2020
  • Marriott Marrakech (Marrakech, Morocco) - 360 rooms - 2020
  • Renaissance Landmark Lagos (Lagos, Nigeria) - 216 rooms - 2020
  • Sheraton Mauritius St. Felix Resort (St. Felix, Mauritius) - 152 rooms - 2020
  • W Sharm El Sheikh (Sharm El Sheikh, Egypt) - 350 rooms - 2020
  • Le Méridien Accra (Accra, Ghana) - 160 rooms - 2021
  • Marriott Abidjan (Abidjan, Côte d'Ivoire) - 200 rooms - 2021
  • Protea Hotel by Marriott Addis Ababa (Addis Ababa, Ethiopia) - 165 rooms - 2021
  • Protea Hotel by Marriott Nairobi (Nairobi, Kenya) - 250 rooms - 2021
  • The Ritz-Carlton Zanzibar (Zanzibar, Tanzania) - 90 rooms - 2021
  • Four Points by Sheraton Abidjan (Abidjan, Côte d'Ivoire) - 259 rooms - 2022
  • Sheraton Abidjan (Abidjan, Côte d'Ivoire) - 300 rooms - 2022
  • AC by Marriott Umhlanga Ridge, Kwazulu Natal (Durban, South Africa) - 205 rooms - 2023
  • Four Points by Sheraton Nampula (Nampula, Mozambique) - 185 rooms - 2023
  • Element Oyster Bay Dar Es Salaam (Dar Es Salaam, Tanzania) - 105 rooms - unknown
  • Protea Hotel by Marriott Accra Kotoka Airport (Accra, Ghana) - 200 rooms - unknown
  • The St. Regis Cairo (Cairo, Egypt) - 366 rooms - unknown
They're interested in bringing Fairfield to Africa as well as expanding The Ritz-Carlton, St. Regis and W (branded residences under those brands are part of the plan; W Sharm El Sheikh is supposed to include 50 residences in addition to the 350-room hotel, while the Sheraton St. Felix includes 37 residences in addition to the hotel). MR also has plans to enter Benin, Botswana, Ivory Coast, Mauritania, Mozambique and Senegal. No word on what happened to the planned Sheraton in Ivato, Madagascar.

Side note: I'm in Cairo and passed by the St. Regis a few days ago. The building is totally done from the outside, exterior signs are up and I can see curtains hanging inside so the interior fit-out must be nearly done or completely finished, especially considering the huge delays the hotel has faced. I wonder if they'll open the property given it's owned by Qatari Diar and the political snafu between Egypt and Qatar.

Excerpt:

"Marriott International continues to reinforce its position as a leading hospitality company in the UAE with the expected addition of 11 new properties by year-end and a robust development outlook over the next five years. Year-to-date, the company has added six new properties and is scheduled to add five more in the country – bringing its portfolio in the UAE to 59 properties and over 17,000 rooms across six Emirates by the end of the year. Two of the company’s openings this year feature regional brand debuts – the eco-conscious Element Hotels brand, which opened earlier this year in Dubai, and the EDITION brand, which is scheduled to open in Abu Dhabi later this year.,,,the company plans to further enhance its footprint in the UAE with the addition of more than 20 new properties in the next five years.

The design-led Aloft Hotels made its debut in Dubai with three new openings – Aloft Palm Jumeirah, Aloft Me’aisam and Aloft City Centre Deira – all within the first half the year. The company launched its eco-conscious Element Hotels brand in the region with the opening of Element Me’aisam. In the luxury space, the Ritz-Carlton brand opened its fifth property in the UAE – The Ritz-Carlton Ras Al Khaimah, Al Hamra Beach in Ras Al Khaimah. The company also took over the operations of the Yas Island Hotel, which is scheduled to be flagged as a W Hotel early next year – marking the debut of the brand in Abu Dhabi....the company is gearing up to open five more properties by the end of the year. The company is also a leader in the luxury space with 15 properties across five luxury brands in the country.

While the company’s development pipeline highlights solid growth for its upper-upscale and luxury portfolio, its select-service brands represent over 70% of the development pipeline for the UAE. The growth of its select-service portfolio, which features brands such as Courtyard by Marriott, Aloft Hotels, Element Hotels and Residence Inn by Marriott, is in line with the UAE government’s efforts to expand the mid-scale segment in the country."
