Cool My 1000th post

This is my 1000th post on FT and I put it on this forum and dedicate it to all Amanresorts which always managed to provide lasting memories through their dedicated attention and love to details.

Aman is a class above what we can find elsewhere, AZ once told me that "everybody is a VIP". That's real hospitality.

Excellence comes also from Australia / New Zealand where Capella and Southern Ocean Lodge are outstanding. The same for Huka and Otahuna Lodge.

In South America the service minded attitude of Orient Express Machu Pichu Sanctuary Lodge springs to mind.

In good old Europe it is the Riffelalp Resort and Beau Rivage Palace.

I am less enthousiastic regarding the Asian "hospitality" in general and write off the whole continent whose people attitude, especially the lack of straightforward behaviour simply does not appeal to me at all. This is a strictly personal opinion and not denigrating anybody - just my right to choose and not to leave my money in countries like China or Thailand. Others may like and that's fine. (This does not concern the Amans there, they are excellent and mostly Western managed).

But after all thank you to all fellow FTalkers for reading my posts and for having me teached many travel related things.

There's something about the first-time experience. The first time I stayed in a hotel a level up from where I have'd stayed previously was at Park Hyatt Tokyo back in 2002. It was really a "wow" - experience in every way. The view, the design, the service level, the New York bar and so on. I also stayed there the two other times I have been in Japan and Tokyo (last time in 2010).
It is still one of my favourite hotels, allthough there may have opened other hotels in Tokyo the last few years that are at least as good.

The Peninsula Bangkok is not only my favorite hotel in the world, but in general one of my favorite places to be in the world.

There are many hotels I love, but I feel the most at home at Pen BKK.

Tough question a there are many. Here is a short list ( kind of):

Oriental BKK - authors suite in river wing or state room
Park Hyatt Tokyo
FS Hong Kong
Singita Boulders
Wakaya Club Fiji
Trisara
Many Amans - jiwa, kila, pulo, Ruya in particular
Auberge du Soleil in 1 bd upper valley suite
Post ranch Inn - ocean house or above accomodation
Peninsula Beverly Hills with bungalow suite
FS Florence
Villa Feltrinelli in main house

Long list and could have been longer, but these are go to again and again!

Sorry for the long list. Could have been even longer....

Since our vacation travels are mostly confined to places where we can burn points, I'm afraid that my list won't compare with many others here. Still, FWIW, without trying to rank these properties:

Beach House Maldives (sadly, no longer Hilton-affiliated)
Park Hyatt Tokyo
Park Hyatt Paris Vendome
Park Hyatt Sydney (more for the view and location than for the overall hotel and service)
Jalousie Plantation, St. Lucia (sadly, no longer Hilton-affiliated)
Conrad Hong Kong (especially for the view and lounge)
Arabella Hotel and Spa, South Africa (sadly, no longer Starwood-affiliated)
Le Meridien Khao Lak, Thailand (not quite as swank as some others on this list and other folks' lists, but a nice place with a wonderful location on an extremely long, pretty beach)
Hilton Labriz, Seychelles
Hilton Moorea, French Polynesia
Hilton Bora Bora, French Polynesia
Conrad Bali (for the superb service and "hotel within a hotel" suites section)
Grosvenor House, Dubai

Having just returned from The Oriental Residence in Bangkok, I'd say this is the nicest hotel I've ever stayed in. Exceptional service, food, and cleanliness. We had a one bedroom corner suite. Would certainly recommend for anyone visiting Bangkok. It's number one in Trip Advisor for a reason....

+1. Staying there now and really like it. Not often I stay at a place where points aren't available...but it's a real treat to stay here!

Great rooms, FANTASTIC staff and really nice gym. Looking forward to checking out the restaurant tonight.
