Grand Canyon luxury hotel
We are considering a visit to the Grand Canyon. From my initial search, it appears that if we want to stay at a luxury category hotel, our best best is to stay in Las Vegas. We are considering either the FS or the RC in Lake Las Vegas. Does anyone have any other suggestions besides Las Vegas? P.S., we are not looking to go hiking but instead take a helicopter or small plane sightseeing tour of the Grand Canyon, therefore we can be a little further away. Thanks.

I would recommend staying in Vegas, as there are many companies that fly out of LAS to do a grand canyon tour. Plus, most of them do a nice fly-by of the strip on the way back. As far as places to stay in Vegas, it depends on what kind of experience you want. I've never been to the RC LLV, or to Green Valley Ranch, but they are both supposed to be nice if you don't want to be on the strip. If you do want to be on the strip, I would recommend FS, THEhotel, Bellagio, or Caesar's (my personal favorite, but I go for the gambling, and I like their casino and sports book).

The RC is very nice and their restaurant is good, but it seems a remote location to me - I prefer the FS. You have all the wonderful dining options in LV, and the shows - would highly recommend "O" if you've not seen it.

Any thoughts on hotels near the Grand Canyon if you actually want to stay near it and drive to hikes and such? I thought I remembered hearing about some fairly nice hotels, one called "The Lodge" or something like that.

These are four VERY VERY different properties! Check previous threads in the Las Vegas forum for more information. Personally, unless you go for a upper category room, Caesar's is not in the same "luxury" category as the FS or theHotel. Both of the aforementioned have somewhat of a "non-casino" smaller hotel feel (especially at valet, elevators and front desk) while Caesar's and Bellagio are typical mega casino hotels.

The "outside the park" hotels are all actually motels and located 60 miles away (so a good hour drive with no traffic; often double that). "The Lodge" is a Travelodge -- probably the only time that the Luxury Forum will have a Travelodge listed! There isn't anything decent as a motel here, much less luxury accomodation.

Oh- and just remembered, it can be very hard to get a booking depending on when you are visiting so make your reservations as soon as possible.

I think you may mean El Tovar - we have stayed a few times, but most recently almost 10 years ago. It isn't luxury like a FS or RC, but rather kind of a grand old historic property, - can't be beat for location.

Surprisingly (or maybe not,) there is not a lot of lodging at the South Rim. You can check http://www.grandcanyonlodges.com/ for all listings.

Sedona/Grand Canyon
Just back from Grand Canyon thro' Sedona.. didn't stay but Enchantment was highly recommended along with L'auberge. Went on the 50 min helicopter tour by Maverick on ' ECO-Star ' arranged by DeTours ( was coming fr Scottsdale ). Spectacular ride well worth it along with the views! This was another return visit for me but first from the air.
Have a great time.. .
