Ritz Carlton Puerto Rico

I am going for a long weekend Dec 4 -7 th and was wondering who has recently been there?

Why the negative reviews?

I have been told that some renovations have taken place.

Thank you

I think DavidO posted a review thread of PR hotels.

While I would consider trying Dorado Beach, R-C San Juan is to be avoided.

Whichever one is next door to the Intercontinental is the one that is overrun by local teens and twenty-somethings at night clubbing at the Ritz nightclub and hanging out at the casino. It's not a pleasant place for those of us who are a bit older.

The RC San Juan (near the airport) is the worst Ritz int he system. It shouldn't even be flagged as a Marriott, IMHO.

I had to stay there one night after a flight cancellation. We didn't have a particularly deluxe room (though I booked the highest available), and it was small and musty. The pool area was overrun, and there was visible slime at the waterline around the pool. The beach in front of the hotel is dirty, and there was household waste (washing machines, etc) visible in the water. It seemed you could get your hair braided or buy pot easily on the beach, too.

Service was also atrocious. Basic requests for things like extra towels went unmet. After three calls to housekeeping didn't yield towels (they were promised, but never came), I walked to the front desk to get extra towels. Of course, for ten minutes I stood at the front desk and found it completely untended. When a clerk did appear, she offered to call housekeeping. I insisted that she and I walk together to wherever the treasury of extra towels was. She at first refused, saying she couldn't leave the desk unattended. When I pointed out that she had left it untended for the prior ten minutes, she acquiesced.

We ate at two of the on-property restaurants and we couldn't agree which of the two was worse.

Other than proximity to the airport, I cannot think of a strength of this hotel.

I wish you better luck.

I recall that they had a half price wine night on Tuesday. We picked up a bottle of Petrus for $650 at the steak house, which I actually enjoy.

Just as an update, I stayed here a few weeks ago. While the service on all fronts was top notch in every way and the beach was clean, I have two issues. The first is the rooms, they are not large and they seem to get musty fairly quickly. The second is the resort fee is not fixed - it's a percentage of your room rate. The same services that have to offered to all at the same times of day all cost different amounts and can be quite high - for what? Please be very careful when booking so this unfair way of adding an extra charge doesn't bite you in the wallet unexpectedly.

Dorado is awesome

I think I have a review here from our stay last year somewhere, highly recommend - I agree the San Juan property is not what one thinks a Ritz should be

This seems to be a recurring theme - for me at least - with the RC line in general.

Yes, there are some standouts. Toronto. Berlin. Hong Kong.

But in general (and maybe it's just the ones I've been to lately), they've been more like a 4* Marriott than what one would come to expect of a 5* RC.
