Amanpuri - The Surin (formerly Chedi), anyone been recently?
Hi guys,
We`ll soon head off to Thailand to unwind and mainly do nothing. We booked a few nights in the Puri and The Surin (formerly known as The Chedi), both share the same private beach and both are managed by the same operator. It seems The Surin recently re-opened after a revamp by Ed Tuttle. Any early feedback or thoughts?

Sure about that? I had a look at the YTL website (http://www.ytl.com.my/hotels.asp) and when clicking on The Surin you are automatically redirected to the Aman homepage.

General Hotel Management Limited (GHM) has discontinued its management of The Chedi, Phuket under a mutual agreement with the owning company Surin Bay Company Limited.

It's no Aman so if you do go, stay there first then Puri. Staff are friendly just be prepared to ' hike ' as no " buggies "
Rooms are relatively small & layout not well thought out .. Perhaps to do with terrain?

The Surin
We stayed at the Surin last January. It was an alright property but not luxury by any means. We had to change rooms after our first night due to being allocated the wrong room type and because they were doing construction right around the room. The rooms are nothing special and you will not want to spend any time in them. The bathrooms had a musty smell in both of our rooms. The plus of the hotel is that it is on what must be the best beach in Phuket. Also, the prices of food and beverage are very reasonable. We had just come from the Landmark Mandarin in Hong Kong, and the Peninsula in Bangkok so this hotel was no where near the same category as those hotels. You will get quite the workout walking up and down the stairs.. which may be a good thing after indulging in all the delicous food in Thailand! All in all.. we wouldn't go back to Phuket, nor would we recommend the Surin as a "luxury" option... but if you go with expectations for a nice mid range resort you will be happy.

The Surin Beachfront Deluxe suites are quite nice though. Rather spacious and it's nice to be directly on the beautiful beach.
I would never recommend the lower categories.
The Surin definitely doesn't compare to Amanpuri or Trisara, which is quite normal considering the price difference.
