Brussels Airlines Nightmare

I was booked on a flight from Birmingham to Milan to get on a connection to abuja Nigeria. Due to brussels airline leaving my luggage in Brussels I missed my connection and had to buy a new ticket, the staff were completely unhelpful both at the airport and when I called.

After purchasing a new ticket i immediately lodged a complaint to be reimbursed. I received a reply saying " We will offer this assistance for delays of longer than 24 hours and only upon presentation of proof of purchase."

The person who wrote this clearly did not read my claim as it took3 days o get my luggage and i provided all reciepts.

Has anyone had a similar experience and how should i tackle this?

Thanks in Advance

Sorry but there are problems with your questions. How does Milan get into the story? Which airline flies MXP-ABV? When were you in Brussels? Did you fly Birmingham-BRU-Milano? Why did you cancel your flight to Abuja? Lots of questions that find no answers here...

Was it an actual connection..or were you travelling on separate tickets?

Normally if all on one PNR it doesn't matter if an earlier flight in the itin is delayed as you are entitled to onward transportation...

If separate tickets...then the assumed risk is yours I'm afraid.

This is one of the risks you take when you connect with flights on a different PNR (assuming this was the case).

There is no way you are entitled to any compensation I'm afraid.

OP - please correct me if I'm wrong:
1. You bought 2 separate tix BHX - BRU - MXP and MXP - ABJ, correct?
2. Brussels airlines had problems and you were late for your MXP-ABJ flight on a separate ticket, correct?

Did you register yourself for the via milano insurance?

OP was supposedly flying from MXP to ABV (Nigeria) and not ABJ (Cote d'Ivoire). At any rate, there are no direct flights to any of them from MXP, so the itinerary BHX - BRU - MXP and MXP - ABV makes no sense. Moreover, what about the late luggage? OP stayed in Milan for a few days till the bag arrived? Unless OP provides details, this "nightmare" will remain a mystery.

As there is a dedicated sub-forum for Brussels Airline, I'll move this over, as you can get some more specialist help.

Please continue to follow this discussion in the SNBA forum.

Sorry i didn't properly explain the whole situation.

These were separate bookings:

1st Flight Birmingham to Milan (Brussels Airlines) then a connecting airline(Egypt Air) from Milan to Abuja via Cairo

Due to my delayed luggage i missed my connecting flight leaving Milan (via Cairo) to Abuja. Once i spoke to Egypt air i paid an extra fee to get on the next available flight which was later on that day but they were unable to do this, which meant i had to buy a new ticket for the next available flight which was 2 days later.

which meant i had to accommodate myself for 2 days in Milan.

The flight to abuja from Milan was via Cairo. The late luggage was sent to my final destination (Abuja) the reason i stayed in Milan was because there were no immediate flights leaving milan for a couple of days.

You said in the first message that you requested a reimbursement. What exactly did you claim?

Since luggage was delivered to you in Abuja a few days later, you could claim the expenses you incurred for some basics.

If on the other hand you want to claim the costs of the new ticket you had to buy, I don't think you have a case, since you were on separate tickets. SN delivered you on time at the airport (did they?), and delivered your luggage to the address you provided. Those were their obligations.

As Palal suggested, did you sign up with the VIA Milano insurance? That might provide some coverage, apart from your travel insurance and/or credit card insurance.

I claimed for expenses incurred (Hotel, feeding, extra clothes, new ticket) although i understand i dont have a leg to stand for the new ticket.

They only offered £91, that barely covers my stay in a hotel for one day.

Unfortunately i didnt sign up for any insurance and i used my debit card instead of my credit card for the purchase of the tickets. It was the one time i didnt get travel insurance as it was a last minute trip.

Lessson learned!

You never had a connection in Milan, and therefore no protection. The lesson to be learned is to buy these tickets as one.

That's my thoughts too. It's always risky to travel on two separate tickets since then no protection in the case of any problems is provided.

This was all confusing, but in the end it sorts out as follows:

1. OP's luggage was delayed into ABJ by a few days.
2. OP did not have a connect at MXP. He transferred between tickets. He voluntarily no showed for the second ticket and suffered the consequences of the no show.

I presume that SN checked OP's bag to MXP and that somehow the bag did not make it. OP therefore may make a claim to SN for necessities such for the "few" days. This might be underwear and shampoo. It appears that SN is willing to provide EUR 91 and this seems quite generous.

As OP purchased a separate ticket for MXP-ABV, the cost of a new ticket, hotels, and food is all his to bear. If he lacks insurance, he will not recover that cost from anyone. However, to be fair, it is not likely that any insurance would cover the voluntary no show on a separate ticket.

This is the risk which OP assumed when he purchased separate tickets. However, as OP found, when his bag was delayed at MXP, all he needed to do was provide his onward address to SN and then proceed to his new onward flight. There was no reason to wait at MXP. SN was quite capable of sending his bag on and did so.
