A full-blown merger would be political dynamite in Germany and is in light of that extremely far-fetched. A notable Etihad investment in LH Group however (i.e. owning 10% or something) would be in line with ME investment strategies in German businesses and is certainly believable.

"Lufthansa [ETR:LHA] has denied the possibility of a merger with Etihad, the UAE-based airline, Italian-language daily Milano Finanza reported. The report cited a source close to Lufthansa as saying that no discussions were taking place over the matter. As previously reported, Etihad would first take a 30%-40% stake in the German carrier before moving on to a complete Merger. As previously reported, the merged entity would have revenues of close to EUR 40bn based on 2015 results."

Define raising prices like hell.... from hamburg to prague on 19 euros and from frankfurt to milan for 30 seems totally reasonable.
the matter is that LH like most big german companies are used to getting their way and making the customer pay for it. now that they see competition and that their "loyal" customers are fleeing they cry foul.

Yesterday approval of the LH/AB deal by the anti-trust authorities had some juicy detail: LH is buying 10 of the 38 AB A320 from the lessors, and renegotiated the lease of 15. Curious if some of these include the 12 A320 that came from AZ. EY gave AZ 9 777s in return from AZ giving AB the A320. 
now that AZ needs cash, that would be a welcome help. Curious if the 'co-operation' with EY Engg and catering cover some financial transaction.
Seriously doubt the *A talk some bloggers are floating though. Any traffic rights handout to the UAE will face severe opposition as EK stands to profit. Especially the N. American and S.E. Asian partners will most certainly object.
