Depends on your previous experience:
- if you mainly fly full service airlines, then yes it is shocking to be denied a glass of water on a plane.
- if you've flown LCC (ryanair, easyjet, vueling, iberia), taken a long distance intercity train or coach, then it is normal to need to plan to either bring drinks/food on board or to buy on board.

I fall mostly into the first category, so it is a crime against my human rights not to offer me a free glass of water on a plane. Some of my friends in the second category do enjoy pointing out that the cost of that 'free' glass of water.

Yes, refill or: Just buy one after security...

How is that so greatly superior to buying one on the aircraft?

It's thuggery either way.

On IB/I2 when flying in european/domestic "Y" you can always ask for a free glass of water and there is absolutely no problem.
Recently on some flights the Gold/Platinum customers receive a complimentary snack as well (but it is not official).

The other option would be to offer to pay with either a Diners card or a €500 note.

Germanwings free snacks on CDG-DUS op by AB!

I recently flew CDG-DUS on 4U and was surprised on arrival to board a brand new A320 operated by an AB crew! They must be short a plane at their DUS base - but amusing to be wet-leasing from your main competitor!

We received free snack an drinks tea/coffee/WATER etc and a little bag of vouchers and a snack/biscuit. Seems like the AB crew were giving every passenger the 'snack pack' upgrade that you are supposed to pre-buy with your fare.

Germanwings is not so different to Ryanair.

Asian budget airlines like Peah or Tiger are different than European ones.

Well, in this case, he has a point.

After all, we're talking about Germanwings here. Now, that means as long as you're SEN/HON AND on a flight where Best is offered, or FTL and at least in Smart AND on a flight where Best is offered, or holding one of those *G status that DO grant you access too (3 members by now?) AND on a flight that offers Best, then you do get access. Complicated as hell, customer-unfriendly like Ryanairs website some years ago, but well, there is some chance that you actually get lounge access when flying 4U.

And well, refilling your empty bottle of water in the lounge would be the most sane approach in such case, yes.

I am still not sure whether BASIC plus *G on NH or UA grants you access.

Recently I had a "lovely" discussion with a 4U/EW baggage-check-in agent.
She told me that BASIC/LIGHT fares do not entitle to SEN lounge access at all -not even with UA *G.
I didnt bother to even approach the lounge and try it out.
Consequently I am avoiding 4U/EW from LHR.
But hey, they dont care of the alienate LIGHT/BASIC passengers.

When a customer buys a ticket thinking they are flying a full-service carrier and end up with an extra-cheapskate service like LH is selling by having flights operated for it that don't even provide a free glass of water, then the customers in the main may as well lump LH into the same category as lower-cost carriers that put on no airs of being a full-service carrier.

Don't even those charter tour package flights mostly include free water for all passengers?
