Swiss preferred seat selection

Swiss preferred seat selection
Some seats are blocked as preferred seat in business class long haul. I have no status with swiss but if those seats are not occupied will I be able to select those seat online, perhaps 24 hours before departure? Or only during check in? Or not going to happen at all?

I haven't scored one on LX or OS since I lost the SEN status.

These seats are near-impossible to get. I have booked 6 months out before, and these seats were still already selected or blocked by the airline. It's so frustrating as I pay full fare for my tickets. I have no status with Swiss or StarAlliance, so I always go to ExpertFlyer and put a "seat alert" in for my preferred seats. Then I get an email when these seats open up. It's worked for me half the time.

- How do you pay full fare without conquering any status with any *A carrier???
- Those seats open up for mortals ... ever? I had no idea
